Only Americans pretty much.  I can tell you that the Mexican-Americans that supposedly might get offended by the U.S. flag don't even celebrate the holiday, and it has no special meaning.

 

Here is another thought.  What is a Mexican-American?  Do people that are (PC) labeled as such identify themselves like that?  What about "African-American"?  Can a white person identify themselves as such?  What is the definition?

Interesting.  I guess parts of California are different that what I'm used to.

 

I grew up in the southwest (Albuquerque, N.M.) and I don't recall ever any Cinco de Mayo celebrations.  I am an American of Mexican Heritage (I refuse to use the term "Mexican-American" to describe myself).  Cinco de Mayo never meant anything to us.  Most Fiestas (celebrations) revolved around our church calendar.  The only Hispanic custom that we have/had was Quinceañera which is a celebration of when a girl turns 15 marking when she turns from a girl to a woman.

I spent my college years in Phoenix, and, no joke, the only Cinco de Mayo celebrations I ever saw were middle-aged white people getting trashed on margaritas, tequila and Corona Light. Granted, I wasn't exactly driving through the predominantly Latino parts of town, but I never got the impression that Mexican-Americans particularly cared about Cinco de Mayo.

The celebration that you linked to that takes place in Fresno is an example of a city that does celebrate it with some "fanfare".  However, as I stated previously, Americans of Mexican descent such as myself don't have any real connection to Cinco de Mayo.  It's not really a "holiday" or a date of any significance.

 

I was suggesting that this is more of an American holiday rather than a traditional Mexican holiday.

 

I suspect that is the case to the celebration that you linked to.  While it certainly is themed and celebrates Hispanic heritage, it's not really a "Mexican holiday".
