"Basically 29 years old...". The guy is 28 and turns 29 in December, so he's not basically 29. He's an elite talent and a massive upgrade to the worst secondary in the NFL last season. Dave almost threw 90 million at Vernon who is AVERAGE and will prove it this year. Any naysayers to potentially landing Norman unexpectedly are simply crazy.

 

So by that logic, the team that drafted him, developed him, reaped the benefits of his stellar play last year, and knows him better than any other team is also "simply crazy" by rescinding the franchise tag and allowing him to walk?

No, Carolina is not crazy. Carolina is much further along in the makeup of their roster from a financial standpoint and have simply made a decision that the distraction of not meeting his long-term demands outweighed the value of maintaining the franchise tag offer. They would be crazy not to retain him at their price. The Jaguars have plenty of money to meet his demands.

Not sure I would want Norman.


It's rare that teams rescind the Franchise tag on a CB, especially considering how important he was to their Super Bowl run. Their GM said the distraction of a holdout wasn't worth it. His demands must be outrageous.


Secondly, he's 29 years old by season's end. He won't be too far away from being in decline.


Furthermore, I want nothing to stand in the way of retaining as much of our young offensive talent as possible.


If we DO sign him, I hope it is very short term-no more than 2 years. But somehow I suspect he wants something longer term.

He's a corner not a running back. He still has a 4-5 good years left.

Less than a year ago a lot of the same posters were telling me Josh Norman wasn't good at all when we were talking about our season opener. Now you're all licking your chops to get.


I think Jacksonville is the best fit for him. You guys are on the rise, playing a terrible division, have plenty of money to pay them, no state income taxes, and you have chicks in bikinis at your games…what's not to love?


He was asking for around 16 million a year. He's not worth 16 million a year. But he is definitely a good player.

I still think he benefits from his surrounding talent a bit (which we upgraded significantly as well) and you're right 16 mil is too much. But the nature of FA, he'll get it somewhere, and we can definitely pay it without worry and he's a significant upgrade for sure.

I still think he benefits from his surrounding talent a bit (which we upgraded significantly as well) and you're right 16 mil is too much. But the nature of FA, he'll get it somewhere, and we can definitely pay it without worry and he's a significant upgrade for sure.

But he absolutely is a product of our system and supporting cast. Not to say he won't be successful somewhere else, but he needs to be used to his strengths.


About the cap....I get you guys have a ton of money, but hasn't it been proven that irresponsible FA spending is not the model to follow? Success teams which have sustained success don't make those ridiculous moves. That's part of the reason why we let him go.

So if it comes down to the 49ers and the Jaguars to whoever can pay him the most money, I can honestly say that the Jaguars are a lot better team than the 49ers. We are more of a team on the rise that the 49ers are. And Chip Kelly will run that team into the ground

Irresponsible is one thing. So far, none of the moves the Jaguars have made are irresponsible. The #s look huge on paper, but the actual cap figures have been well managed. We started out with about 70-80M in cap space this off-season, and even after Ivory, Gipson, Jackson, Prince...we still have 54M available. Prince is a one year deal, and Ivory we can basically get out of with little to no penalty after the 2nd year (IIRC). I think Jackson's is 3rd or 4th year.

 

The way the contracts that we handed out last season (Odrick, House, Skuta) was done, it was the same. We'll be carrying very little dead money if we choose to get rid of those guys later in their contracts. Not to mention that we've built with a young core through the draft. By the time ARob and Blake's contract needs to be re-done, a lot of these older vets that we signed to help us get over the hump we can dump without much hit.

 

Also, his skill set is a good fit for our scheme as well. House was near the tops of the NFL in PBUs last season (3rd with 27, according to NFL), and that's with an anemic pass rush. If we can generate a pass rush this season, I think it would allow Josh to play like Josh.

Basically what SpeedyG said regarding cap. Dave has done a very good job structuring contracts that don't cripple us. Most are very front loaded with no dead money/smaller cap hits later.


I think if we did make an offer to Norman, it would be along those lines, which a lot of FA players seem to like as its better for them as well. Being that it's probably Norman's last contract, I think he'd definitely like a lot of front loading

I would only do this deal if they can front load the contract.  First in 2 years the Jags have a lot players who are going to get big raises, Bortles, Robinson, Smith, etc.  Next Norman will be 29 this year and more than likely he has 2 more years as an elite CB.  Now he can still play Slot, Nickel, or FS once he loses a step but you don't want to be paying your nickel back elite shutdown corner money.

Supposed to be down to SF and Jags........who knows.........reportedly Norman wants to play on the west coast. He's probably using Jags and their deep pockets as leverage with the niners. SF offer would have to be grossed up to compensate for California's high tax rate.

um, josh norman is the real deal... plays elite man coverage... the most coveted thing by a cornerback... he is confident and cocky, also important at CB.

 

this has to be something we go all in on... he's 28... that's fine.. if he was already 30 that would be different..  this guy is legit, not a product of a sytem, sure good players around him helped, but he is not a product of a system.. thats ridiculous.
