Hanging an "AFC Finalist" banner is ridiculous. It's a participation ribbon. Hanging an "AFC South Champion" banner would have made sense and not made the Colts a laughingstock (anymore so than Grigson has already). It feels a bit like a stab at the Patriots, which doesn't help them at all and certainly won't help when the Pats roll into town for Brady's return.

I hate to agree with Jag fans here, but it is very different and isn't even remotely comparable.. Because even if you lose the Super Bowl, when you're playing in the NFC/AFC Championship game you're playing in a Title game and when you win it you're winning a championship..


They hand out hats and T-shirts that say "CHAMPION" to the winning team and give them a trophy to put in their trophy case.. They don't hand out hats, shirts, and reward a trophy to the losing team. If you don't get called "champ" don't raise a banner. It's embarrassing..and it does resemble a participation ribbon.


As far as the other finalist banners Y'all have hanging, never been to the stadium, didn't know that, those are equally strange.. Are the Colts the only team who does this?


Also I don't think you can compare this to the Pats 16-0 banner, teams raise banners all the time to acknowledge great team/player accomplishments.. While they did lose the Super bowl on the greatest hail Mary in NFL history.. They're still one of 2 teams in NFL history to go 16-0 (or had a undefeated regular season, since the Dolphins didn't play a 16 game season), so they acknowledged it. Is losing the conference Championship a rare team accomplishment?.. No, that happens twice every single year.


Not trying to start a argument, its just they aren't comparable.. But, they're up now and you can't take them down, because that would be even more embarrassing.. Just stop putting them up in the future.. It's beneath that franchise which already has a great rich history to stand on.. They don't need to be throwing up participation banners.

This whole episode is hilarious. The Colts banner, the defense of the Colts banner, the argument it's a Bostonian distraction mechanism (is this a wide spread thing?) I guess 15 straight years of winning with 10-15 more on the horizon dulls one's appreciation of funny.

Problem is it doesn't make it right or anything more than a participation award.. The guy basically spoke how hard it is to make the playoffs and as a Texans fan, trust me I know that what he says is true.. It's hard to win in the NFL.. Everybody knows that, that's a given going in, but just because it's hard doesn't give you the the excuse to create a banner for losing a game and go against what real meaningful banners stand for.


Your team lost a game/got blown out and they raised a banner for it..Did they go out for pizza and ice cream after the loss also? It's coddling and it isn't just the Colts either..


That/those banners illustrate everything that is wrong with current America. Everybody is a winner.. Instead of people accepting failure and going home empty handed everybody needs to be congratulated, because "even though you came up short, you really tried hard..here you go buddy".


Sometimes it's good to not be praised and have your nose rubbed in it, take your [BLEEP] whooping, and taste defeat..that's what makes you work even harder so you don't feel that way again..this "everyone is a winner" or "we don't keep score" crap that is going on today is a joke and it's creating a entire generation of sissies who never develop the necessary coping skills to deal with failure or adversity.. It is more on the embarrassing side then anything else as far as I see it.

 

I could understand it if it was some little league team of 8 or 9 year olds getting a participation banner/ribbon/maybe trophy (with team name and year on it), but not an NFL team.

 

NFL players are professionals who made it and play at the highest level of football.

 

If an NFL team wins something, great, go ahead and hang your banner with pride, but if an NFL team loses a big game (conf championship/Super Bowl) what's the point of hanging a banner for participating, but losing that game? You lost.

 

If it makes them feel good to hang up a bunch of AFCS Champion banners, go ahead and hang them, you won those.

 

I know I don't ever want to see the Jags hang any "Finalist" banners up.

The Lions also have playoff banners.  This is pretty much a non-story.  Most of us will forget it ever happened until the next team decides to hang a banner for something.  Like we did with the Lions.  Or the last time the Colts did it.
