Does anyone have any experience fishing with artificial's such as Berkeley Gulp shrimp? I've been thinking about picking up a pack this weekend.

i posted something about them on the previous page... i prefer the the molten or the natural colored shrimp personally... normally use a 1/8 ounce jig head and just slow bump them across the bottom... go up to 1/4 ounce jig if the current or wind is rough... ive actually had alot of luck with chartreuse colored jigs if the water is really dirty, but generally use a molten gulp shrimp on a gold jighead... caught reds trout flounder blackdrum, pretty much everything inshore on those

one thing to remember with gulp is never leave them on your hook when you are done. they are something like 70% liquid so the shrivle and harden on your jigheads in a matter of hours.

So slow bump and retrieve. No quick jerks? Do you rig them backwards or forwards? I've heard of people biting off the tail and rigging them backwards to mimic life-like motion. I bought a pack of new penny with the green tail and some 1/4 ounce green jigs and plan on fishing Heckscher Dr so I know the bottom is muddy.

occasionally quick, but your gonna be trying to mimic a shrimp, so u wanna pop him an let him sit cause that's when he is gonna get waxed... trout will bite the tail off, red and flounder normally strike a little harder so they get the whole bait... i always go through the nose even tho thats not how shrimp will kick... i feel like normally, fish see the kick and not which direction it came from so they strike after it settles or while it's falling...with gulp, they have a lot of scent that attracts as well, so even letting them sit on a oyster bar can be productive... as far as getting them to not just get the tail, u can find longer hooked jigs that set the hook farther back but its one of those things just happens, at least you know he fish are there and like your bait

Quote:I'm about to take my kids fishing for the first time (6 and 8.)

Any advice or suggestions on what might make a good trip?

I'm used to lake fishing from private property in VA, so I'm less than novice at fishing NEFL.  About all I know is I need a license (separate salt and fresh), but they don't.  And I don't have access to a boat, either.

Any/all advice appreciated, especially with a sense of humor.

It depends on what you want to do as far as fresh water vs. salt water.  I can't help you much regarding salt water as I haven't done much salt water fishing in years.

When it comes to fresh water, you have a few options when fishing from the bank.  The "easiest" and best approach if you're taking kids to fish is to get either some worms or some crickets, and fish along the river or in one of the many retention ponds around.  A simple rig consists of a bobber of some sort (small) and a hook.  Don't concentrate on casting out as far as you can, rather cast closer to the bank.  Doing this would enable you to catch multiple species of "bream" (blue gill, sun fish, etc.) as well as the occasional large mouth bass.

Keep in mind, you are dealing with kids who are very young and will quickly get disinterested if nothing is happening.  I would stay away from artificial lures or techniques until they get a bit older.  Fishing for bream is usually pretty easy and productive.

One word of caution though, I would not keep or consume any fish caught out of a retention pond or even in the river around the Jacksonville area.

For me I enjoy fishing for the scenery, and to appreciate God's creations....

Going surf fishing this weekend, hopefully catch a pompano. I typically use dead shrimp and live sand crabs caught right off the beach.

I have used it fishing along the intracoastal but have never had any luck with it. I always hear good experiences about using it though.

Just got back from the keys and did a little fishing... went out of robbies tuesday of last week and had a pretty good night charter... robbie's has a good crew and captian and are really good at putting you on fish and keeping you stocked with bait... honestly may be one of the best party boat charters i have been on. caught a few magrove snappers, strawberry groupers(which despite the tiny size may have been one of the best fish i have ever eaten), some yellow tail, and  one guy on the charter caught a massive snook which is really uncommon for where we were off shore. over all, good trip... one of my buddies caught his first bone fish in the flats near our condo, that was a shocker to see how hard that thing fought, it wasnt even that big but it went absolutely ballistic once i got the hook.

Sounds like you had a great time. I haven't been out much the past couple of weeks. I did happen to visit the retention pond down the road from my house and caught me a very nice 5 pound bass on a little plastic worm.

Nice man... thats a good size bass... one of my buddies fishes the retention ponds on JTB and Kernan. i Have seen him pull some monsters of the one on the north east corner of the intersection closest to UNF... not sure how much they weighed but they were nice fish.

What kind of set up are you using, i just got a med-heavy abu garcia vendetta rod with a 4000 shimano stradic c14 reel... basically for everything inshore up to the jetties... maybe a little strong for bass though lol.

That's a pretty nice set up. My "old trusty" is a Berkley medium-heavy lightning rod on a Penn fierce 3000 reel w/20 pound braid. I've fished up and down Heckscher Dr, Mayport, and the occasional retention pond on that set up without any issues whatsoever.

i have a med lighting rod that was 6'6 but i broke 3'' off the tip on accident and it ended up stiffening it up a bit. so i stuck a little flueger with 15 lbs braid on it and keep it in my truck, i have caught more fish on that stupid thing cause i always have it on me... my problem is when i get something expensive, i dont end up using it as much cause i dont bring it everywhere. i have a st crox with a stadic on it that has barley seen the water cause i dont take it in my kayak or anywhere i think it could be dunked lol.

i have to stay away from the tent sales at strike zone cause end up buying something every time i go in there lol... they always have good deals on stradics too.

i have the red and black penn fierce too and i love that reel... its another one i take everywhere cause i really dont mind beating it up a bit.

i've been wanting to try one of those "star" or "all star" rods from academy, my buddy has one and loves the set up.

Same here. I have a couple of decent surf set ups and a very nice Shimano baitcaster rod/reel combo that I have barley even used because I keep "old trusty" in the trunk with me 24/7. I haven't heard of the all star rods at Academy. I may have to look that one up.

I have yet to have gone kayak fishing but its definitely on my to do list. I have a buddy who's been begging me to go with him and is always bragging about the bull reds he seems to catch (or should I say catch him as it drags him up and down the river) on almost every trip.

Couple of my boys and I went Shark fishing in Jax Beach Friday night.  Freaking awesome.  Caught a 5ft Lemon Shark about 30 yrds out.

Fishing is extra good on the river now. Shrimp are running. In about a week they should be around the jumbo size. I have a body with a dock on the river catching 4-5 dozen a day in a trap he has out. Not even cast netting yet.

Killing the bass and trout right now who are feasting on the shrimp. Went fishing off his dock a few weeks ago and caught a bunch of jack, catfish, and even a gar. Catfish was some good eatin.

Going to go slay some shrimp next week and stock the freezer up.

I had a little 16' C.C. for a while in Jax around 1995-1999.  My favorite fishing was hunting red drum in the intra-coastal "creeks."

Had some really fun days putting in at the Carlucci Ramp (sister's creek area)  and exploring oyster beds north from there in Clapboard Creek.  Caught a few bull reds back in there and a few doormat flounder too.  Mostly smallish trout in that area - but found bigger trout in Mill Cove when the weather cooled off each year.  I used mostly live shrimp as bait back then.  Fiddlers occasionally.
