89 guys of 90 guys make the voluntary OTA....he's not setting a great example as a defensive leader and veteran.  Yes, it's voluntary...but many are disappointed that he's not there. 

Who is it setting a bad example to?  If 89/90 guys are there -- and Clemons is the only one who missed, it seems none of them thought "Well if Clemons isn't going to be there, I don't see why I should."

Didn't he skip OTAs going back to when he was in Seattle?  I can't see how they would all of a sudden expect him to come.  

 

I actually think it's somewhat important that at least some players don't show up to "voluntary" workouts.  If everybody showed up, it would be kinda stupid.

I actually think it is human nature to at least look in the mirror and say, well I probably should go since the whole team is working hard to bring a championship to the city of Jacksonville and I am the only player that didn't volunteer.


He is not losing sleep over it because it is voluntary, but I am sure he has atleast doubted his decision, just a smidget.

It's not like this is an isolated incident.  He's done this in the past.  He's in communication with Bradley, and the coach is well aware that Clemons understands what the expectations are when he returns for the mandatory work.  It didn't hurt him in Seattle when he did the same thing, and it's not going to impact him here.  The fact that he's the only one missing is irrelevant.  At the end of the day, he's a professional.  He has shown that he'll show up prepared an ready to go when it matters.

Every coach wants every player there even for the voluntary stuff.  We've seen it with past coaches here when players weren't on site for OTAs.  Remember when Fred Taylor skipped out on voluntary stuff to focus on his private work in South Florida?  That didn't go over well with his coach then, but it had zero impact on the level of play when he returned for the mandatory work.  It is what it is.  I think people are making a big deal out of nothing here.  These older vets in particular know best how to prepare themselves for the upcoming season while minimizing the wear and tear they have to endure.  If this was some untested guy doing this, then it would be an issue.  Clemons doesn't fit that mold.

It's not irrelevant when you're making yourself stand out by being the only guy who can't seem to make it.

 

It's not like he has to work hard when he gets here.  He can always pull a John Henderson.

 

No one is suggesting it's the end of the world, that there's some conspiracy behind it, that it's destroying the locker room, or causing a rift with the coach, etc, etc...

 

But yeah, big deal, little deal, or no deal... it wouldn't be an issue at all had he simply showed up.

 

By being the only guy, he's unnecessarily putting the spotlight on himself.

 

As he's on his way to retirement, etc. in the next year or so.

maybe he had something more important to do; making your retirement arrangement's is very important if you have a significant portfolio as I'm sure he does.

Hey, I love Chris Clemons.  We are lucky to have him.  He doesn't need to be there, he knows what he needs to do.  He is an excellent veteran to have around in any capacity.  Hope he sticks around after retirement to break in the younger players too.  I love having him on the roster.  Age means nothing at 35 if you are healthy and strong with better than average talent and high-value experience levels.  One of my favorite players.
