Jaguars to Release Will Blackmon

#21

Quote:I forgot about Gratz even being on the team. I think it would be McCray and new CB across him. Gratz backup and Colvin in the nickel. Maybe Gratz can fill holes in FS, I don't think so but just an idea.
He's got the athleticism for it and was projected to FS by a few different outlets (NFL Draft Scout being one of them) before his draft. It's the instincts I worry about. His mistakes last year were, by and large, not physical limitations. They were flat-out mental errors. On the one hand, that's a relief because mental errors can be corrected to a degree. On the other, it's disheartening, because for a guy who played pretty well as a rookie to regress that badly with the mental aspects of the game makes you wonder if he's capable of rebounding.

Gratz will probably be our Nicole back w/McCray and Colvin as our starters... We need not select an CB high in the draft...

Is this a sign that the Jags will make a move for Byron Maxwell once FA hits?

No shock here.

One good season + one bad season + yet another injury.

For a guy that a'int getting any younger and has had a litany of injuries that kept him off the field.....  that doesn't add up well.

Colvin played so much better at nickel at the end of the season than Blackmon did in the early weeks,  it has to make it tough to justify keeping him around.

Also - I'm glad they are bringing back Ball.   I wonder if McCray or Ball are comfortable playing the side Gratz has been manning.

I could dig a McCray/Ball corner combo with Colvin at nickel and Gratz as depth.

They don't call them the "sophomore slumps" for nothing.

It will be interesting to see if Gratz rebounds this year. The 3rd year is usually your make it or break it year

Will was one of the playmakers on defense so this move caught me by surprise. He'll catch on as a nickel back somewhere.

As it relates to the cap, Will's release leaves a mere $25,000 in the books as dead money. If on the roster he'd have cost $945,000 this year (plus another $250,000 in incentives), so this is a direct savings of $920,000 with virtually no dead money.

Its kinda funny to see the term "playmaker" associated with any DB on our team.

I liked how he played in 2013. Haven't heard much about him since after that.

Good look Will.

Definitely a veteran that we all will remember fondly.

Played well for a while and was a good pro.

It speaks volumes that this coaching staff is ready to let him go - just tells you how much better our CBs have gotten in the past 2 years.

Not the start to the offseason that I wanted, but it's not the end of the world. I wish Will the best of luck in finding a new team. I would have preferred Colvin to start at nickel, but I wanted to keep Blackmon was a backup/depth.

I've seen the link to this interview on Schefter's twitter yesterday. I liked Blackmon when he was with us in 2013 preseason. He is a true professional, team player and a good person. I hope he gets a chance to stick on some team this season. With all the injuries we currently have in secondary I wouldn't mind if we sign him to compete in training camp if he's healthy. But he'll probably want to go to a team where he has more chances to start.

Blackmon seems like a great guy, I love how active he was with the fans on Facebook, Twitter etc

I'll just leave you guys with this classic:

Sadly it will never happen.

I guess there's only room on this team for one Blackmon at a time. Hopefully this means Justin is returning soon.
