I am a United States Citizen, My Mother and Father were Refugees from Iran

#21

Quote:Guys, refugees aren't a bunch of terrorists in disguise just waiting to infiltrate the US, form terrorist cells, and execute long thought-out plans to blow themselves up strategically.

Those are first world issues for rich kids raised in Egypt, the Emirates or Saudi Arabia.  Refugees just want people to stop killing and raping them.  Some food and a warm place to sleep for a month or two would be nice.

For those of you who think I missed the point of TAM's post, this is what I got out of it:

1. Iran sucks, essentially because of nationalism.  Maybe we shouldn't go down that path.

2. Refugees love their new country, hate their old one.  That's why they left in the first place. Maybe we should take a few in.

3. Iran, like some other countries have a bunch of reasonable people in them that would really like a better life in a better country, and can bring a lot to that country.  Maybe we're missing out when they go to Canada or the UK instead.

TAM is welcome to correct me.

My own story involves fleeing Jamaica when it went through it's own nationalistic movement in the late 70s.  A guy named Michael Manley came to power promising to make Jamaica great.  Guess what?  He didn't.  He had his own bogeyman to blame for why not all Jamaicans were finding prosperity, and that bogeyman looked an awful lot like me and my family.  He drove a lot of us to Canada, the UK, and of course, the U.S.  Some of us stayed and rode it out, but the country never really recovered.  I'm glad I'm here, but you'll pardon me if I don't keep quiet while I see a scene from my past replaying itself in the greatest nation on earth.

The most sensible response in this thread.

Quote:Well, if the U.S. won't lead the way in compassion, we should just chisel Emma Lazarus's sonnet off the Statue of Liberty and scrawl "America First!" on there instead.

I guess that's probably what we'll do for the next 1-4 years.

OR we can take relief and security to them.  Because Obama was weak and spineless, the USA stood on the sidelines and allowed the ISIS cancer to metastasize.  When we implement proper vetting as mentioned by former AG Mukasey here, we can begin taking in some refugees again.  But we should set up a safe zone in Syria so these folks don't have to leave their country.  You'll see more and more Americans open up their hearts and wallets to help them, too.

Some people are so brainwashed they have literally twisted TAM's words which is sick.

He gave a well thought rational post on how he felt and the majority of responses on here are "all immigrants should be banned point blank period".

Not one person in here said immigrants should be banned. You paraphrased nothing. Most of what I read were respectful to his situation, but agreed the vetting process requires some improvement. Stop with the false outrage.

Immigrants with visas, dual citizenships , and green cards are being detained and held at airports.

Are you not getting the facts yet.

You weren't paraphrasing.  You purposefully changed the intent of what was said.

Simply projecting your own hatred of the right.

"all" immigrants? Not even close. Just those from designated terrorist nations, and it's a temporary (90 day) ban until the vetting process is fixed. Waivers are also available to those who shouldn't have been banned.

You mean there was confusion because of the sudden onset of a change in immigration policy that hadn't trickled down? Pretty sure what you state has been resolved and not factual at this point.

Let's go through this very quickly.

When the WH gave the EO they did NOT notify the DOJ, Homeland Security, or TSA until the last minute which consisted of a 10 minute briefing before the ban went into effect, hence the confusion.

The federal judge of course issued a stay but that does not mean everybody was able to be let in or be released. People who were detained were provided a pro-bono lawyer via the ACLU.

The article I'm linking below talks about how the stay granted by the judge stops short of letting the citizens into the country and the status of their situation beyond Trump's 30 or 90 day timeframe.

So points of confusion like I stated. Full text of EO: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/27/us/po...trump.html

Already read the EO, that's one of the MANY issues.

My point it this is more complex than what you are making it out to be.
