We are marginally better on offense compared with 2012 and 2013. Rushing yards/game, for example ( 85.6 in 2012, 78.8 in 2013 and 98.1 so far in 2014). We're still only 21st in the league in rushing yards/game. however. Scoring, however, at 15.8 pts./game, is last in the league. We were 22nd in 2013 and 30th in 2012.

 

We're currently last also in interceptions, sacks allowed and QB hits. We were near the bottom in those 3 categories in 2012 and 2013 also.

 

Nothing really stands out in the offensive stats to indicate "progress". Maybe I'm missing something.

Put the rushing numbers into perspective.  We've basically rebuilt the offensive line this year.  The running game has improved as the line has come together, and that's with multiple rookies in the mix.  As these younger linemen develop, and become bigger and stronger with a full off season under their belt, those numbers SHOULD continue to improve. 

 

As far as the interceptions go, that's the by product of a rookie QB being pushed out there before he was actually ready to do so.  But, he's getting good experience, and as he does, those mistakes should diminish.  The sack figure is irrelevant.  It's skewed by an historically bad day against the Redskins, and that QB is no longer playing, and the line is in a very different place today.  Bortles still takes too many hits and sacks, but again, that's what rookies do.

I actually think the offense moves the ball pretty good between the 20's (light years better than any Gabbert-led offense we ever had)

 

The problem area's to me are:

 

-Getting started from inside our own 20 (we rarely drive over 80 yards)

-Redzone offense (not unusual for a young offense but we seem to have a penchant for turnovers here at the worst time)

-Chunk Plays (I wish I was smart enough to identify why but I'm not  :teehee: )

 

I have been a defender of Jedd Fisch but some of Lageman's comments are starting to color my view of him as of late...

He basically implied there is an issue with the route spacing in our offense. That the WRs are all running routes to similar areas of the field. He didn't explicitly call out Fisch but he said "it needs to be looked at" during the bye. Maybe someone can corroborate that for me. 

 

He also said we don't run more deep routes because the line can't protect well enough in obvious passing situations/deep drops... or something along those lines.

I didn't hear the comments, but I have noticed a few of Fisch's passing plays running receivers into one general area (especially bunch formations for obvious reasons) and I had been under the assumption that he was trying to aide Bortles in making his reads by having 2 and sometimes three options within the same field of vision - so that he can read two or three receivers quickly without having to scan as wide an area. 

 

It's strictly an assumption on my part - but it seems like a decent "water-down" for a rookie QB that has shown the bad habit of staring down a guy.

I've noticed it as well, but I assumed a little of the above and chalked a little bit up to maybe the WRs not getting the proper depth or spacing on their routes. Either way, far be it from me to know what the root of the issue is, but Lageman questioning it certainly caught my attention a bit.

 

I listen to virtually every radio show and he isn't very prone to specific criticism like that. It was interesting at the very least.

So basically, we move the 2014 expectations to 2015. Since I honestly can't see more than 2 or 3 more wins this year, we're looking at a 3-13 or 4-12 record ( again ). Very few people who post here predicted a record like that this year, myself included.


It would be a miraculous turnaround to make the playoffs next year, with a new rookie class and a still- youngish team, so we should push our playoff expectations to 2016, at the earliest.

It's no miracle if the rookie QB plays better next year and the oline runs the ball as well the rest of this year as they have the last few weeks.
