Rich Rodriguez 5-0 @ ARIZONA

#21

Quote:Rich Rod sucked at Michigan. Michigan didn't hire Rich Rod's defensive coordinator (Casteel), so Rich Rod decided to completely neglect that side of the ball.

For some perspective, here is how Hoke and Rich Rod did in their first three years with Michigan:

Rich Rod: 3-9 (2-6 in conference)

Rich Rod: 5-7 (1-7 in conference)

Rich Rod: 7-6 (3-5 in conference

Hoke: 11-2 (6-2 in conference)

Hoke: 8-5 (6-2 in conference)

Hoke: 7-6 (3-5 in conference)

In 2010, you would have been on here laughing at Michigan for taking so long to fire Rich Rod because of the dumpster fire Michigan was in. Hindsight is 20/20.

im not saying this is exactly why but based on the trend you displayed with those stats, it looks like rich rod was getting better every year as his recruits started coming in, then when they fired him, the first year, hoke reaped the rewards of rich rods work.

hoke got worse every year when he was doing his own recruiting and running his own system.

I'm not defending Hoke. He needs to go. I'm showing how terrible Rich Rod's threes season were. Hindsight is 20/20. 4 years ago people were LOL'ing at why Michigan ever hired Rich Rod. Now those same people are LOL'ing that Michigan fired Rich Rod.

i was not one of them. in college, a great coach is very important. not just for the x's and o's but recruiting.

at that time rich rod was a huge name.... the hoke hire i was not impressed with.

like i said rich rod was on the ascent when he was fired.

Yes, in college a great coach is important. Who said it wasn't?

I'm saying that after winning only 6 conference games in 3 seasons, the Rich Rod hire was considered a failure. It wasn't just Michigan that thought Rich Rod needed to go. After those three abysmal seasons, nearly everyone criticized Michigan for even hiring Rich Rod in the first place.

my point is he was fired when he and the team were on a rise. it was better each season.

hoke has gotten worse each season.

Why do you keep insisting on bringing up Hoke? No one here is defending Hoke.

After a 3rd bad season (7-6, 3-5 in conference), following two absolutely terrible seasons, Rich Rod's time was up. You keep saying that he was getting better each season, but so? Rich Rod's first season, he led Michigan to it's lowest win total since 1963. Of course the following year was going to be better.

In 3 season,s 15-23 (6-18) is not going to cut it. Especially so when you are get absolutely dogwalked by your Rival (37 to 7) and embarrassed in your bowl game (52 to 14) in year 3.

How old are you? 15? I'd expect anyone older than that to remember how 95%+ of the NCAA Football world was saying Michigan had to fire Rich Rod. It's not like Michigan was unjustified in cutting ties with Rich Rod.

The whole point is Michigan should have never hired Rich in the first place. You run a pro style offense. You have personnel suited to run that offense. You have upcoming recruits who are all suited to run that offense. And now yore going to completely change offensive philosophies and expect to be winning games in 3 seasons? That's absolutely stupid. If Michigan wanted to hire Rich, fine. But they should have had realistic expectations for making such a drastic change in personnel. 3 seasons is not a realistic expectation

really? an age jab? pretty impressive argument.

no one said you or anyone was defending hoke. my point is, rich rod took that team over after lloyd carr left, he overhauled the way the team played offense completely. he had to bring in a whole new crop of players to fit his team. growing pains should have been expected. yeah the team was very bad the first year, he showed steady improvement which you could only assume would have continued to be the trend. if he was given ample time to fully imbed his system with players that fit it, i think michigan would be much much better right now.

and who cares what 95% of people say. just because something is popular opinion, doesnt make it right.

thats a good point too, why hire someone who you know is going to have to change everything?

if they brought in another pro style guy, they wouldnt have had the huge decline in the first place. BUT they did hire him, and i dont feel they gave him ample time to implement his system with the proper recruits.

If he didn't get lose 20+ games in three seasons and get embarrassed 52-14 in his only Bowl Game, he probably would have bought himself more time to prove his system could be effective in the Big Ten. Instead, he blew chunks for 3 seasons.
