Quote:Pass protection was fine, Denard did alright behind this line.  I don't think they were near as bad as people are making them out to be.  Gerhart isn't quick, then on a bum ankle.  No holes up the middle but there looked like room on the edges.
Many people have blamed Gerhart.

I'm not sure if I am ready to do that, but I remember remarking when we signed him that we seemed to have signed a power back behind a smaller OL.

I wonder if there is anything to that.

I DO think at this point, it is a waste to run Gerhart on stretch plays.  Just run him between the tackles.

Quote:I get this, and you could certainly make that argument.

I just think that with a little more help from the offense-perhaps as little as maybe 3 extra first downs in that second half, the defense gets the rest it needed and doesn't give up those plays.

There was at least one screen Todman(?) had it gift wrapped, and several others as well.  Their defense deserves credit for the batted balls (weren't happening the first half) but there were a lot of plays left on the field that should have been made by the receivers.  One ball just about hit Marcedes in the head.  He wasn't looking soon enough and didn't even get his hands up until after the ball passed.

Quote:Good write up Bullseye and I agree with all of it. I also saw some Telvin Smith and he didn't look to small for the game. I think T Smith, Branch, Davis and Watson are going to make for a deadly fast pass rush once they get gelled and i'm really excited about that.
Thank you Obj.

Aside from getting faked out on that one run by McCoy, I thought Telvin Smith did pretty well.

Branch had a nice sack and forced fumble.  Note to Branch's detractors:  That sack and forced fumble he had was NOT on a stunt.  He beat Jason Peters (one of the better LTs) cleanly.  Davis had a good game, and just missed a sack that would have given him a monster game.

While I agree that the 4th down decision was incredibly risky, the fact is Fisch made a GREAT call. We got what we were looking for, other than our QB to execute the play. I hate to be in the "play Blake" crowd, but it makes me wonder how he would have done in the 2nd half. Veteran experience or not, we KNOW what Henne does when the game gets tight in the 3rd and 4th quarter. As the pressure built when our defense could no longer stop them, so did Henne wilt further and further. Maybe Blake would have thrown 1 or 2 interceptions. Maybe he throws 1 or 2 more TDs. There's only one way to find out, and I for one can't wait to find out whenever it happens.

I'd like a breakdown of our OL, but the initial impression is that they simply just did not hold up. There were not enough running lanes for any of our backs.

Perhaps its just a coincidence, but Cyprien's injury seemed to coincide when their offense came alive.

Scobee has long been a fan-favorite, and yes he was coming off an injury, but is it just me or has he lost some leg strength? I remember coming into the league when his kicks routinely went into the endzone. I wonder how long he has left as a kicker for us, especially if we can find a cheaper option.

Quote:Yes, he was dropping the passes that hit him in the hands.

The Henne trolls are simply unbelievable... yet predictable as the day is long.

Nobody is trolling. Everyone had a play in the loss, but Henne was throwing underneath on 3rd down, misuse of time management, burning useless time outs. His throws were terrible, esp the 4th down intended for Marcedes...

Do you think he should start over BB?

The O line, the O line, the O line.  Everything hinged on the O line.  Bullseye made the salient points explaining why: they couldn't open up a run gap or properly protect Henne, thus couldn't convert enough third downs to a) put us in scoring position and b ) give the defense a chance to rest.   I stated in the game time thread the O line seemed to be our only weak link.  I still believe that to be true.  If we can get a good line to open the gaps and ensure Bortles doesn't get killed, good things will start happening.  But a Bullseye said, we are competitive, which is a big improvement from last year.

We were far from competitive in the second half, real real far.

Concoct any fantasy you want, bring any pre-formed opinions or bias into your flawed analysis, but sorry... realize that's what you're bringing to the table.  Henne didn't lose this game by giving them 34 points.  But then, I doubt you'll understand just how asinine that truly sounds anyway...

Tons of injuries. When Pros came into the game I knew it was over. No one could get the momentum in our favor. Defense was dominant in the first half and then they looked way out of place and holes everywhere night and day difference. I hope we can just get healthy and this doesn't linger into the next game.

No pain, no gain.

3.  What DID cost us this game, IMO was the offensive line, specifically it's inability, from the very first series of the game, to provide credible run blocking.

This OL hasn't had credible run blocking for 17 straight games, now.

4.  While I can understand the rationale behind going for the 4th down at that point in the fourth quarter, I'm not sure I agree with it.  As we have discussed in another thread, defense is the strength of this team, certainly at this early stage of the season.  Bradley should have played to those strengths.  By going for it there and not making it, it gave the Eagles the possession of the ball at point blank range.  The defense stopped them, but the field position resulted in a FG and a two score lead.  Had they punted away normally and given up a normal return and similarly stopped the Eagles then, a FG was no given, and there was still a chance to tie the game with a subsequent possession.  Yes the defense was tired, but I'd rather they be tired with more field to defend.

Disagree with the play call all you want, but the play was there to be made. Marcedes was open and should have had an easy first down. The pass was lousy but still catchable, and Marcedes got his 2 briefcases on it, only to have it skim them and hit the ground. A TE making the kinda coin he is is expected to make that catch.

6.  Get well soon, Cyprien.

I was impressed with Cyprien today. Its a shame he got hurt.

     c)  Allen Robinson-We have been waiting a long time to finally see him in action due to those dang hamstring injuries that kept him out of most of training camp and the preseason.  I wasn't expecting too much from him under the circumstances, but his use and accompanying lack of production was still disappointing.

Allen Robinson was a disappointment today, but I probably expected too much.

Lee dropped an easy over the shoulder throw that would have been a big first down.
Its clear that Lee is going to need Bortles before he becomes the kinda of weapon he showed in week 4 of the pre season.

     i)  Allen Hurns-A most pleasant surprise and a very good debut.  After his second catch for his second TD, it seemed Chris Berman's tagline for Cris Carter (All he does is catch TDs) was appropriate for him.  He put a sick move on the go route down the left sideline to get the team off of the one.  The only knock is what should have been called a fumble late in the game.  Nevertheless, I am thrilled beyond measure with him.  In just this one game, this UDFA showed more route running acumen, ability to separate than first round busts Matt Jones and Reggie Williams, and infinitely more "want to" than Soward.  Every year, we fans like to latch on to these bargain basement, rags to riches mini camp and preseason heroes, only to be let down 99 times out of 100. He appears to be that one we've looked for.

As I have been saying for weeks now, Hurns is currently playing the best WR on the team and should be starting in even 2 WR sets.

Regarding your first point, while I disagree with the decision to go for the 4th down at that point, the play call was the perfect call for that situation.  I agree completely they had everything they wanted on that play except execution.

Regarding Scobee, I seem to recall all of his kickoffs going into the end zone.  At this point, I am just concerned he might be in something of a slump on FGs.  He has avoided prolonged slumps in his career.  Hopefully he will continue to avoid them.

The OL looked like they played well enough to me.  We didn't seem to get much from our backs, except on screens.  There were a few good runs, but too few.

Sure, after you flip flopped on Mike Brown being better than Hurns.

Ahh, the denial now.

You were quick to dismiss Hurns early, propping Mike Brown over him.  You're not slip sliding out of this one now.

I called you out on it right then.  Maybe you forgot since it was Ace you were once again trying to put on the bubble during the discussion.

What does any of this have to do with Chad Henne not being able to put games away?

Are you saying Chad does put games away?  If so, I would love to see a few of those games that he's done that in.

As for your 2nd paragraph, par for the course for you.

It would have had to have been a circus catch.  But then, he did make a lot of good catches in the game.  Several.
