Quote:There was a point in time where she was on the short list to replace Johnny Carson when he retired.

Johnny froze her out of his show after Rivers got her own show on another network in the same time slot as The Tonight Show. Carson never forgave her, and she was very bitter about that experience.

Yup.  She got impatient and decided to jump ship.  Carson was big on loyalty, especially from those who were beholding to him for getting their break.  When you listen to the comedians who got their start in front of a national audience on his show, they talk about him with such reverence, especially if they got the call to come sit down and talk to him after doing their set.  Guys like Letterman and Seinfeld still idolize the guy to this day.  When she jumped to Fox to host her own show, Carson was ticked off because she never reached out to get his blessing.  Instead, he heard about it from the network.  He never spoke to her again.

What's funny is that she was banned from the Tonight Show by Carson, and both Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien followed suit, never allowing her back on out of respect for Johnny Carson.

I would imagine that was probably one of her bigger regrets.  She certainly made up for it though.  She became quite the entrepreneur starting her own jewelry, and accessory line, hawking her goods on QVC.

She was a pioneer in a lot of ways, and an extremely shrewd business person as well.  She had best selling albums, books, and successful TV shows.  Despite her abrasive approach to her routine, she was extremely popular.

Just scanning her bio, she worked with a lot of the comedy greats of days gone by.  She was still doing her thing up until last week when she went in for the surgery.  She clearly lived life to its fullest right to the end.

<p class="">Joan Rivers never played it safe. She was the bravest of them all. Still at the top at the end. She will be sorely missed.

<p class="">Joan Rivers once told me she would die before she'd ever apologize for a joke. I'm glad she made it.

Quote:You thought she was funny?

Egads, not me....I thought she was "nails on a chalkboard" level annoying with that personality.

Its unfortunate, since I was never able to get past that to hear more of what she had to say - according to some she at least had a mind of her own and wasn't a sheep.

Definitely not a sheep. That's what I liked about her.

It was reported years ago that she died. The advances in micro braid string made it possible to operate her as a puppet for the past two decades. It was only with the new HD technologies that the operators became aware that even the thinnest string would become visible exposing the grand scheme. something had to give. RIP grand puppet of comedy, RIP.

She didn't have any sort of mechanism that stopped a thought from her brain coming out of her mouth. She let it fly, any and all. Gotta respect that.

I love that she said what everyone else was thinking...but didn't have the nerve to say out loud.

I agree, and I loved her standard response when the audience groaned in response to a particularly sharp barb:

I didn't know much about her work until I started watching "Fashion Police" a few years ago. Even though they had to bleep out a lot of what she said, you could usually figure it out and she was funny. There was nothing off limits with her, and her jokes were shocking at times, but she constantly made fun of herself also.

RIP Joan Rivers
