Raiders to relocate to San Antonio TX?

If the Raiders move it will be back to LA, IMO

Why? It didn't work then. Why would it work now?

I believe San Antonio is only the 37th largest market.   That would make it difficult for them to have another professional sports team,  as the highly successful Spurs are heavily supported by businesses in San Antonio.     There's only so many dollars businesses can invest in advertising/ marketing.

With the Cowboys being very popular in most of Texas,  including San Antonio,   I don't think San Antonio will support their own NFL team to the extent that it will get enough backing from the local business community.

D6 I respect you but your just regurgitating crap that others spew. The 37th media market has some truth but it's fluky math. San Antonio has a larger viewership than Oakland when you compare city to city. Where its skewed is when you add San Francisco to the mix and its misleading to call Oakland the 6th largest media market and San Antonio the 37th. To be fair San Antonio would include South Texas from Austin down. That is a crap load of viewership. There are actual statistical proof that the San Antonio Market alone is the second largest market for the Cowboys. Thats why Jerry Jones gets so defensive about the topic.

San Antonio does not have a ton of corporate backing but it is becoming a hot bed. Most corporate supporters have the Spurs full attention but when you add an NFL team to the mix, guess who there going to spend the dollars on? One more thing. The Eagle Ford Shale made a ton of Millionaires in South Texas. There are plenty of people to support a team for 10 games. No doubt about it.

ThunderCat,  one thing I want to express before replying to some of the comments you provided is if the NFL decides to expand to  San Antonio or a franchise that in essence needs to re-locate decides to move to San Antonio,   I would be happy with the outcome.   I much rather San Antonio get an NFL franchise than an NFL Franchise being placed outside the U.S. or Canada.     I also rather see San Antonio get a franchise than Los Angeles getting yet another franchise.

My take on Oakland is while it shares a market with San Francisco,  most people living in the East Bay are Raiders fans.    The Raiders have a very large following there.   Whether that will be enough for the Raiders to get a new stadium in the Bay area that satisfies Mark Davis remains to be seen.   It wouldn't surprise me if the Raiders leave the Bay area again.

In addition to the Cowboys,  which has a massive following in most of Texas,   the Texans also have a sizeable following in Southern Texas.

Getting back to the Cowboys,  they have held their training camp in San Antonio a number of times.    With the long tradition of the Cowboys,   it's going to be difficult to build a new fan base in San Antonio and elsewhere in Texas.    If the Cowboys played a ' road' regular season game in San Antonio against a San Antonio team,   for at least 15 years my guess is the majority of fans at the game would root for the Cowboys.

Would be pretty cool to see San Antonio get an nfl franchise. But, it would be sad if that franchise had tradition, like the Raiders. But if it happened to the Browns, and Raiders when they left LA for that matter, then it can potentially happen again. I just think Davis is playing it as a scare tactic to get his own stadium.

If the Raiders do move out of California will they keep the name?

Davis is using as San Antonio to leverage a better deal in California. Nothing more.

If Florida can support 3 teams.... oh wait Wink

But seriously Dallas is NFC, I would think the Texans would have the bigger belly ache about it.  I think one of the bigger issues is the Alamo Dome would need a big cash influx to get it up to standards.  I really think it is a good bet that the Rams will go to LA.  They have had offices there throughout the STL years.  My understanding is they still have a fan base waiting for them to return.

The Raiders aren't moving to San Antonio.

They're doing the same thing Baltimore did years ago when they came to Jacksonville to discuss relocating there.  It was nothing more than a negotiating ploy.

The Rams still might go back to LA.  The city of St. Louis wouldn't be devastated if they left.  It's a baseball town.  They'll support the Rams when they're winning, but only barely.  If the Cardinals ever hinted at relocation, the city would melt down.

The city would do more than melt down.  Every city council member and the mayor would be burned in front of the stadium.  The Jones Dome is a convention center and it is near a casino.  It doesn't have great sight lines or add to the atmosphere.  The baseball park is positioned perfectly and has so much character.  The blues setup is really nice as well.  Hopefully they will keep renovating the opera house.  It is a really nice setup.

It would be like the Steelers leaving Pittsburgh. It will never happen.

I spend some time in St Louis (O'Fallon to be specific) for my job. I was amazed at the Cardinals support there. It's like a religion. And on the other hand, you'd barely know that they even have an NFL team.

When I worked downtown game day was insane.  The Blues crowds were awesome.  The Rams games not so much.

Yeah, I spent a month down in Fenton and worked in St. Louis.  I passed the ballpark at least 100 times on the interstate, but never got over there because it was during spring training and baseball hadn't gotten back to Missouri.  To a person, anyone I asked about the Rams made it clear they were an afterthought.  St. Louis is truly a baseball town.  The Blues do get attention, but even they are a step child to the Cards.  The Rams may come in a distant 3rd.  I think even college football ranks ahead of them.

When you look at the updates made around the stadium to turn that into an entertainment hub, it makes sense that Lamping was brought here to do pretty much the same thing for the EverBank area.

That was my experience as well.  I know a local talkshow host out there, McGraw Milhaven.  He was my cousin's best friend growing up.  I talked to him about the sports environment out there, especially since I was out there right before the NFL draft a few years ago.  I knew that the buzz here in Jax was all about the draft, but in listening to sports talk out there, it was barely mentioned.  He's the one who actually explained the dynamic to me, and his viewpoint matched yours.  The Cardinals are a religion in St. Louis. If the Rams left tomorrow, it might make news, but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who would be genuinely upset.

I went to a Nats Spring Training game this year against the Cardinals.  They had more buzz and excitement for a meaningless B Squad team then 1/2 the year of football sports talk.

It is interesting how they talk down when it comes to Jacksonville.  They are still bitter that Jax was selected and they had to take another city's team.  It is good to be back in Florida.

Back on thread.... my friends in the Bay Area say the new 49ers stadium will work against the Raiders.  The A's want a baseball only facility as well.

I was in St Louis the week after the draft.  Wore Jags stuff a few days....not one person talked football.  Usually if you're in a random city and you wear Jag gear you can strike up a conversation, but not there.

We did go to a baseball game and they were playing the Braves.  Packed house, great atmosphere.
