It does seem like odd timing. Best of luck Babs.

Not surprised at all

Babin was signed in case Chris Clemons turned up out of shape or a shade of the player he used to be so we still had a vet in the locker room

Sounds like Clemons is doing well and with branch praised by Bradley on a weekly basis, Davis young and talented and Smith recently drafted Babin was the odd man out

Good move

Not sure about this year, but I'll bet the guy ends up as a position coach somewhere eventually.

I told you he was no roster lock. (Had to get my first-ever self pimping in)

I liked Babin.  He came in here with a bad reputation and he proved them wrong. He worked hard every play he was out there on a team that wasn't very good at times last year.

I wish him the best.

I think this is mostly about Branch and his offseason.    Clemons, Branch and Babin were going to have to split LEO snaps 3 ways.   For a team in a rebuilding process, there was no need to give snaps to a 34 year old Babin at the expense of a 24 year old Branch.

This and his age didn't help. Probably the young guys were just as good and can now get the reps to improve faster.

Now Babin will be free to explore his tonsorial talents:  UNDREADED - A Hair salon

Quote:Somewhat surprising.
I figured when Chris Clemons was signed it was possible, and I assume Babin might be injured.

I'm not surprised at all. Clemons is starter at Leo. Coach bradley has talked up Branch all offseason. Chris Smith they drafted in 5th rd and Ryan Davis fits well in Lighting package and coach Bradley has mentioned possibility of Dekota Watson getting snaps there as well.

It appears the team would rather waste time successfully scheming for Branch to produce rather than rely on the raw talent of Babin.

It would be awkward if Arizona picked him up. For Andre Ellington anyway.

I believe it was a "tounge-in-cheek" remark referring to a thread from a while back where Swaguars went in on Branch as trash.

I'm wondering if the introduction of the Otto position had something to do with this?  Maybe the reason he was resigned in the first place was to see how he would fit the system after they brought the Otto in.  Considering how small his guarantee was when he signed his new contract, that's what makes the most sense to me.

If age was the sole issue, I don't think he would have been resigned in the first place.

I don't know if it is premature to say if the younger guys have stepped up or not.

I DO know that prior to this move, this team had THREE (3) DEs that were 30 or over.

Two of those guys just came from Seattle, were contributors to a Super Bowl winning team and a dominant defense, and were familiar with Bradley's system.  Neither of them were likely to be cut.

Babin was older than both of them.

You can't build with three 30+ DEs.

Worst to 1st.  Curse Reversed!

I'm with you on Branch. He hasn't sold me yet. However he is an asset to the team during hot weather games with his ferociously windmilling arms. Unfortunately it's the opposing team's offensive tackle getting the most benefit.
