McDaniels has something to prove and after somewhat failing (not on a Gus level of proportions) and then going back on BB staff, I'm sure he has learned even more.

McDaniels and Haley among others will be at a disadvantage since Caldwell stated he'd like to get the new coach in here ASAP. McDaniels and Haley will likely be coaching their teams in the playoffs deep into January so that will likely remove them from contention. TC is sitting at home on the couch.

No way would I turn down a quality candidate because his team is in the playoffs

The perception is that the Jags have a lot of talent on the roster. That along with a good owner and nice location I would think yall could have your pick of coaches.

Personally I wouldn't either but teams are usually not as patient. Teams rarely go a full month without a head coach, especially when other teams looking for coaches are snatching up candidates left and right. Then, if the guy you were waiting on declines, you're screwed.

Quality staff gets tqken up longer you wait. I doubt all of PIT, NE, TB, etc. All make it far.

It's not surprising the team would be seen as a desirable place to go. The roster is much better than Bradley managed to get it to achieve, plus Bortles is here and a lot of people already consider him to be a lost cause, so whatever coach comes in has a built in excuse already if year one is bumpy.

This is a job that represents the opportunity for someone to come in and "be the genius that pulled the worst team in the NFL into contention."

Can't candidates interview during the playoffs?

You can ask a team for permission

Right, permission must always be asked, and coaches on teams with a bye can interview on the bye week while teams in the wildcard round can interview in the first half of the week following it.

So, we can likely interview McDaniels in a week?

Haley was one of my top choices until I listened to the chopping wood podcast with Sully. I had forgotten how much he fought with that FO and even went to the point of hiring a private investigator to sweep his office cause he was paranoid that they had bugged it.

Among the names that have been the subject of speculation, I think he is the guy I want the least here.

Obviously Haley and Kansas City was a very bad mix. The situation would obviously be discussed in an interview and doesn't mean that would happen in Jacksonville. With this exception Haley checks off all of my boxes for a HC

2 of the best coaches in the league right now were "retreads" who sucked at their first NFL HC gig.

This surprises me not. It's apparent that this team is loaded with talent to anyone with working eyes. The Jags gig should be the most attractive opening this year out of all the suspected vacancies.
