That also implies Manziel and Bridgewater weren't seen as franchise QBs, or at least carried significant risk that put them well out of Bortles league in their eyes.

 

I think that's probably the case.

 

Had the guys gone with a receiver at 3, we would have wound up picking from the 2nd tier QBs later in the draft.  I think it was imperative for this team to identify the top tier QB they felt gave them the best prospect to become their franchise guy, and grab him at #3. They got that out of the way, and it allowed them to have a lot more flexibility for the remainder of the draft.  They could also still grab another QB later on.  I'd be fine with that.  But, if they had passed on grabbing a QB at 3, we'd be hoping we could get our guy next year.  We don't have to worry about that now....hopefully.

If you have Watkins and a guy you see as a franchise level QB on the board when you're picking, you draft the QB.  This draft is plenty deep for receivers.  Not so much for QBs who can have an impact. 

 

True, but they also felt like Bortles was a project as they won't start him year 1. Ergo, Bortles was seen as carrying a significant deal of risk, thus you take the slam dunk and trade back up for a QB. Especially since the guy you want isn't going to play year one anyway. You have an elite, impact player for this year and your project QB rather than just one.

If true, then I'm not as disappointed by yesterday. I just felt we needed to get the best value we possibly could, but getting a franchise QB is invaluable in today's nfl.


I'll watch more videos to become a fan of the pick. All I can say is he is nothing like Blaine gabbert. He seems to have good pocket presence, and he's not a coward. As of right now, the only comparable nfl QB is roethlisberger. He lacks big Bens arm strength, but he does have intriguing athleticism.

Would an extra 4th round pick be worth the risk of loosing out on your franchise QB?

 

What makes you think that dealing with Atlanta only would have netted us a single 4th rounder. The Eagles traded back from 22 to 26 and got an extra 3rd rounder to do so, and that is 20 spots later in the draft.

I'm sure if you go around calling the other teams to see if they want to trade, it totally won't lower the value of what you'll get because teams will know you want to trade or anything.

 

If a team wants the pick, they're going to call.  That's why teams sit by the phones.  Waiting for a call on a trade.  You don't call them.  They call you.  It just reeks of desperation if you call them.

Caldwell sold Gabbert for a 6th round pick.  I think most of us would have been happy with a conditional 7th.

Caldwell is on record saying he would of took Bortles 1st overall if the Jags were picking there.  Caldwell also stated they had a list of over 20 candidates they eliminated from drafting due to character issues, injury, etc. I don't believe Clowney was even on the jags radar.  I believe that to be a good thing. 

 

Also for weeks Bortles was projected to go 1st overall to the Texans.  For some strange reason he fell off the radar and analyst kind of forgot about him. This pick could make or break Caldwell.  Joeckle also has plenty to prove.

After some of the things that played out in the draft and the rumors that Cleveland was very high on Bortles as well, it's probably safe to say that we could traded down but Bortles would've been gone. Caldwell was smart to pick his guy at #3.

The Texans were in the same situation that KC was in last year. They were a playoff team with a huge hole at QB. Under that circumstance, it made sense to expect them to reach for a QB, especially in the no-trade mocks. Bortles was projected to Houston because their staff was expected to target only prototype pocket passers, which eliminated Manziel and Bridgewater. That Bortles was projected to the Texans says nothing about what the mock makers thought about his value.
