Well its also different expectations. What does Bridgewater bring to the table? Use his size to shrug off would be sacks? His ability to scramble outside the pocket and break off a long run? His ability to stand in the face of pressure and throw a 30 yard bullet while falling backwards? No. You are drafting Bridgewater because of his great pocket awareness and deadly accuracy between 0-15 yards. So when facing no rush with no DBs, you'd think a guy who has to rely on his great accuracy to be a successful QB would be able to light up a pro day and not let the ball hit the turf. But he didnt do that. And if he isnt lighting up a pro day with his accuracy what else does he bring to the table? Nothing.


However a guy like Bortles or Manziel, you arent surprised if a few balls hit the turf because deadly accuracy isnt why you are drafting them high. Bortles for his size, ability to shrug off sacks, and make plays ala Roethlisberger. Manziel for his improvisation, scrambling ability, and somewhat surprising arm strength.


Maybe its not fair Bridgewater has higher expectations. But in a pro day setting he should shine more than others. Thats just the reality. A pro day is a guy in shorts facing no rush throwing to WRs running against no DBs. Instead, if a pro day was 300 pound guys grabbing at the jersey or the legs of the QB who was then forced to break those tackles and make a play with this feet or throw off balance with guys all over them then you would expect Bortles to look better than Bridgewater. Because it would highlight part of the skillset you are drafting Bortles for while it would hide some of what makes Bridgewater an attractive prospect. If Bortles struggled in that scenario and Bridgewater outperformed him, you'd have to wonder what Bortles then brings to the table.

So his Pro Day was a disaster, and now we should celebrate the fact he worked out as he was expected to this time around?  Will there be a trophy ceremony where we can get autographs?

 

It's clear to me after all this nonsense that I personally wouldn't draft him in the top 10, but I've got no problem if we take him with or second pick.  That's something I find myself having to repeat quite frequently.

 

Mack, Watkins, even Robinson and Matthews... I simply don't see where anyone can logically conclude he's among that caliber a prospect to consider at #3.

You do realize that you aren't the only one who is allowed to make a joke or have an opinion here don't you. I find it humorous that you accuse people who are less negative than you are about Bridgewater of being "fanboys" who are overly emotional about him, yet my short jab about how excessive you are in your negativity causes you to go on a rant. You seem to be the one who is thin skinned and who reacted emotionally to my joke.

In a poll of 17 NFL personnel men, only two named Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater the best quarterback prospect in the 2014 draft.


Johnny Manziel received eight first-place votes. Blake Bortles got four, and Bridgewater tied Derek Carr with two first-place votes. Zach Mettenberger garnered the final top-quarterback vote. "Smart enough kid," one scout said of Bridgewater, who scored 20 on the Wonderlic Exam. "I see him kind of like Geno Smith. I don't know if he's any better athlete than Geno but he's a little stronger character kid. To win, he'll have to have a good supporting cast."

So now Manziel is over Carr or these are different guys voting, do you guys remember the thread I made I think before the combine, the one I was shocked that Carr was liked by more Scouts or GMs what ever it was then Manziel. 

 

Right now i'll just wait and see, some of these guys are gonna look like fools again just like 2011, Locker, Gabbert, Ponder looking like bad picks

I watched it, and I read several accounts from those who were there.  While 5 inaccurate passes doesn't seem like much, it's the other issues people were concerned about.  The ball wasn't coming out with much zip.  It fluttered at times,  Sometimes it came out awkwardly.  5 misses wouldn't have raised an eyebrow, but all things taken into consideration, there's a reason his pro day was panned the way it was.  Should it have an impact on his draft status?  No.  But, it still was pretty bad.

 

As far as Bortles pro day, the knock on him about footwork and his deep passes coming up short were both eliminated.  His footwork looked good, and when he missed on the deep passes, he was overthrowing his targets, which tells me he has more than enough arm to get the ball down the field, and just needed additional practice to get the timing down with his receiver. 

 

Manziel's pro day was entertaining.  He made all the throws he needed to make, and alleviated most concerns about some issues.  However, his size continues to be the problem along with his desire to improvise more often than not.  Prisco was talking about it today, and he mentioned specifically that little spin move he does.  He said that he won't be able to pull that off with as much effect at the next level because people are bigger, faster, and stronger. 

 

I thought of the pro days, Mettenberger was the most eye opening.  Not because of the accuracy or the arm strength.  Mostly because the guy threw over 100 passes, and ran around on a knee that's only a few months removed from major surgery.  Granted, he's not a mobile guy, but he moved around well and really impressed.

 

Nice summary. I agree with others who thought Bortles wore down quickly (and I was unimpressed with his play in the Fiesta Bowl).


 

There were concerns about Manziel's arm strength that his pro day proved were unfounded, but you are right, his size is still a big concern against NFL pounding (as is Bridgewater's to a lesser extent). I'm not so sure about 'XXX can't do what he did in college against bigger, faster, NFL players.' They said that about Tebow's running style, but it turned out he had no problem breaking NFL tackles just like he did at UF (of course he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with his passes, but that's a different matter).


 

There are concerns about Mettenberger's pocket presence that can't be answered by a pro day, but he's a prototypical pocket passer who should get drafted fairly high.


 

It will be interesting to see if Bridgewater falls, and how right or wrong the GMs turn out to be if he does.
