Indeed, and I don't mean to discredit Oehser at all. He understands the desire for a constant flow of information and he does a very good job of trying to keep up with the current fans. He just doesn't have as much polish to his work as Ketchman did.

Oehser has a different role from Vic.  He's more of an internal reporter/columnist for the team.  Ketchman was the editor of the entire website.  He had a lot more on his plate. 

 

I like Oehser.  I didn't warm up to him right away, but he has gotten much better over the past year or so.  They've started giving him a larger role, and I think he's doing well in that capacity.  Still, Vic is missed.

Vic's style of writing really captured me with every piece he wrote. John just doesn't have that same effect on me, but I still like the guy - he has some self-deprecating humor that makes up for his dryness.

Oehser is a trained reporter.  Ketchman was a columnist at heart, and a romantic when it came to the good old days of the NFL.  That's partly what drew him to Green Bay and all of the history there.  That, and a pension and retirement that he wasn't going to get here.

I think they have two different styles and are clearly from two different eras.

 

Vic romanticized football and "the glory days". I think he is more of a longform journalist.

 

Oesher is more of a modern Twitter era, 140 character journalist.

 

I think both are good.

Do any of you guys still read 'Ask Vic' on the Packers' site?  I still read him every day.  I read Oehser too but if I could only pick one, it would be Vic's column.  Like FBT said, he used to irritate Jag fans with all of his Steeler references but now he irritates the Packer fans with Steeler and Jaguar references.

I only read Ask Vic every blue moon or so - and I don't especially miss him.   Largely due to the fact that Oehser isn't half bad and there's such an uptick in content on the website since Shad took over.  Being a displaced fan - the additional web content is really nice to have around. 

 

I was a little ticked a few times at the Steeler rambling and it makes me chuckle to think  that somewhere a Pyackers fan is feeling the same way.

With the amount of money the Jaguars make per year and Weaver's fortune, I'm kinda appalled that Ketchman didn't have that sort of compensation lined up for him here. I mean, we're not talking a mom & pop Deli here, we're talking multi million dollar business. They couldn't afford a pension for a team editor?? It wouldn't have cost that much in the scheme of things.

It's no secret that the money made was not reinvested into the front office operation of the team.  In fact, they were constantly cutting costs to the point where they created fan programs to help sell tickets because they'd depleted the sales staff so dramatically. 

 

It may have been a multi-million dollar business, but it was run like a family shop. 

 

As soon as the deal closed and Khan assumed ownership of the team, one of the first moves he made was to renovate the ancient office space, and to expand the ticket sales department.  New desks, chairs, computers, the works.  I think as time progresses, we're going to see Khan continue to expand that mindset from a small market team that is just scraping to get by to one that is a world class organization.

I read John and Vic everyday and Vic still has the edge. He has great stories from 42 years covering the game that you won't get from many other writers. I wish John would talk more about his time in Indianapolis, but I know he doesn't have nearly as many years in the business as Vic does. Vic is also more likely to address questions on other NFL issues, but he probably gets more diverse questions writing for the Packers website than John does writing for this one.

I didn't say Ketchman retired. It was suggested in this thread and otherwise in past threads, that Ketchman left Jacksonville, in part because they weren't going to provide him with any sort of retirement/ pension when that time came.  Green Bay allegedly offered that security to him.
