Anybody think we take a look at Pats center Ryan Wendell?  Would be a solid C IMO and just turned 28.

With the draft picks, you're looking at close to 20 new players on this team.. most of them (hopefully) upgrades.

 

Maybe we don't get blown out in 7 out of 8 home games this year?

 

I think so.  I am trying to keep my expectations modest, but if we can fill in the holes on the offensive line and Henne can perform consistently at his best, we've got a chance to crack .500.  Maybe even the playoffs!  Ok, calm down, self.

I do think we still sign a FA Center. I can't imagine them wanting to enter this season with potentially 2 rookie starters on the interior. They are just waiting on the market to settle down and currently none of the available centers have signed yet.

It is a fun time to be in Jacksonville during the building of this team.  The past few days have been a blast!  Seems like every other time I check my phone, another move happens or someone is signed.  Last year's draft is looking good, a couple key free agents were brought in during last offseason.  Now we are getting solid contributors that are genuinely excieted to be here that are signing this week.  It does not appear that the bank is broken, it seems robust even after these moves.  Next we have more draft picks (in what everybody says is a deep draft) than we have had in as long as I can remember.  

There is a chance we are competitive ahead of schedule... or at least ahead of everybody but Gus and Dave's scheudle.

I think it's important to realize that we cannot spend all our cap this year, or we will could next year start out way over the cap.   Right now we have 34 million in cap space because of our carryforward from last year, but we're only 14 million short of the league-wide 133 million cap number.   If we go all the way to our total 2014 cap number of 151 million, we could start next season having to cut players to get under the cap.

Very soon, the free agency period will enter the next phase, where you can pick up depth players on one year "prove it" type deals. I see Dave picking up some additional players in this phase also.

Clearly there is still a long way to go -- and a young quarterback to add -- but general manager Dave Caldwell and coach Gus Bradley have the Jaguars pointed in the right direction.

To me, one thing is VERY clear - the 2014 Jaguars defense ain't your daddy's defense.  We should see the beginnings of an above average defense in the making, very different than the Stroud/Henderson elite defenses.

Being that we were last in defense (or close) last year I'd be happy if we made progress to average defense. 31st to 20th for example would be a big improvement.

31st is still next to last.  


I'm hoping we manage to have the 24th or better defense, and the 24th or better Offense next year. Ideally aiming for 22nd or better on both sides of the ball.

That's about the poorest reference to something taken completely out of context that I've heard lately.  That wasn't uttered until the season started and we began losing guys to IR, etc.  It certainly wasn't EVER stated at this time of the season.

I am going to withhold judgment for now...some of these guys are older stop gap guys...I do love that we have 11 picks...hopefully we can parlay that into 2 or 3 impact players in areas of need...unfortunately until we fix the QB position we are going to be near the bottom of the league as far as record goes...

 

Now I will say this...while these guys are older stop gap players...we did get them early in FA at decent prices...which is nice...I almost fell out of my chair when I read we got a 6th for Gabbert (I don't expect to see the conditional pick next year)

The nice thing about this time of year is that the optimism flows freely. You can see change and see the future. There's a feeling of excitement and a renewed sense of fanhood.

 

It's a magical thing that happens and makes us all feel this way. I think the NFL knows that, and has made these offseason events what they are for this very reason.

 

One can't help but get excited this time of year. If this doesn't make you excited or optimistic, you're either not really a fan, or have serious issues. There are a couple examples of that very thing on this board. No names need be named. They make themselves obvious to the rest of us. I actually feel sorry for them. They have surrendered an annual period of true joy over being a fan of an NFL team. The ones they hurt the most are themselves too. Sucks for them.

I can understand the negativity associated with Blaine Gabbert. I wish him well and good luck with the 49's. I don't blame what happened with Blaine on Blaine though; I blame that on Gene Smith and former head coach Jack Del-Rio. Gabbert should not have been on the field at all during his first year here, and probably only had limited touches in his second. Instead, Del-Rio threw him to the wolves and he folded like a cheap jacket as a result. He never recovered from it. Well, this whole business with him and those who created the situation are gone now. 'Nuff said... 

 

I think that for the first time in a long time there is reason to feel a little more optimistic about the future of the team. We really seem to have made good acquisitions in FA (although only time will verify this...). Given what has been done in FA, the draft looks much better for the Jags. Shad said we will get a quarterback in this draft; it will be interesting to see who it turns out to be. I really like the thinking that seems to be going on in the front office; we invested heavily in FA to bolster the offensive and defensive lines, and then use the draft to get young talent that can be developed quickly.
