Texas Youth Football League Does Away With "Participation Trophies"

#21

Quote:Yea everyone always wins and life is an even playing field. You know what kids, if you can't do as well as the next guy don't worry society will make sure you get "equal" rewards :whistling:

Quote:So you're saying kids are so dumb that receiving a trophy that everyone else got has them believing they are as good at that sport as everyone else on the team, and that the lesson they learn is that they need not excel in life, they will get a meaningless reward either way?

You don't give kids much credit.

I think you are giving them too much credit. Kids are impressionable. What Eric states could indeed be a lesson that they "learn" from that. And judging by today....Eric seems pretty much dead on, lol.

Quote:I'm saying it's one chance to teach kids a life lesson. Not to many institutions teach kids that rewards are earned instead we teach rewards are entitlements, but hey hyperbole is fun!

Yeah, but you're assuming there is no other reward for those who excel, and their excellence was in no way dependent on their teammates.

Then why do we have so many comments about recipients of the participation trophies throwing them away because they realize they are worthless?

This isn't about the kids, it's about the parents. Some parents who see their kids carry a team resenting the other kids receiving any recognition.

I wish someone had told me I was a winner when I was young, instead of locking me up in my cocoon. I think I would have liked a trophy for being a part of something. That way I would always remember the good times I (theoretically) would have had as a child. Alas, this was not the case. I was a loser and maintained the loser mentality for quite some time.

Just goes to show that it doesn't always work out the way you think it would. Something so insignificant might have an impact...then again it may not. Constantly losing isn't very fun.

Excellent! I already have a job and a place to live, so it should be pretty easy going on you.

I believe that "trophies" should be only for the superlatives on the particular team/ sport. Now, if they want to give each player a recognition award like a piece of paper with that fancy writing on it or something, thats fine.

You're making it too easy for me to respond with something depressing.

Because everyone including the kids that got the trophies would be getting the "participation paper"; it would serve almost as a "thanks for playing" kinda thing. The real superlatives of the team would still be the only one getting the trophies as recognition of being superior players.

Quote:For me it's about teaching the kids a lesson they have to learn in life, you won't always win and you won't always be the best. I got another kid on the team, he goes 100% in practice, hands down the fastest kid on my team, the hardest hitting kid on my team, but on gameday it takes one play to take him out of the game all day long.

If the other team has a player as fast or big as him, he quits no other way to put it. He doesn't know how to compete or God forbid lose, that's going to be a problem for him as he grows older.
That really has nothing to do with getting a trophy.  That needs to be taught by his parents or mentors around him that you cant just quit.

Getting something to show that you played a sport will provide a memory in my opinion, not validation on whether you're good or not.

I'm ok with this approach.  Even if every kid got a little trophy, and then you provided extracurriculars to other kids that showed good sportsmanship, mvp, etc etc....

Giving a piece of paper to every kid is the same as giving a cheap trophy to every kid.  In the end, they mean the same thing.

Withholding a 3 dollar piece of plastic/pressed wood will help teach life lessons I suppose.

You want to be completely terrified. Coach youth sports and watch the coaches and parents you have to go up against. You'd think they had a BCS berth on the line.

Nah, I'd think the trophies would still mean more, but as said, everyone would be getting this participation paper as a sort of thank you for playing - even the kids that got the trophies.

I wouldn't give even a small trophy out to anyone but the team superlatives. They have to mean something more. Its not the price/ or how nice it is (in response to SDR's $3 piece of wood comment) , but the symbolic value thats the issue.
