Caldwell should be shopping Marcedes to Green Bay right now

#21

The trading deadline is in one more week, on October 29th this year.  It would not shock me to see Lewis or even MJD get moved.  Babin, on paper, appears to be a good trade candidate as well, except that his play has been pathetic.

That argument becomes less & less relevant the deeper we get into the season as more & more of it has been paid.

So his $7 million salary next year is of no consequence?

Not when Green Bay could simply cut him this offseason and not owe that 7 MIL.

Wouldn't that leave them on the hook for some dead money though?

Maybe the reason people are looking at why it wouldn't be made is because it won't be made.

Seriously, go back and look at all the player trades and free agent signings the Packers have done since Thompson and McCarthy have been there. They rarely bring in anyone of merit as their whole focus is on drafting and developing players in house. I live in Wisconsin and I can easily point to weaknesses they've had each year and the sensible free agent signings/trades they could have made to get better and yet they almost never do them. It's not the type of team they are.

If the Jags deal Marcedes, I believe it would be Jacksonville that would be on the hook for any dead money at the time of the trade. It wouldn't be passed onto Green Bay. At that point GB would be responsible for only Lewis base salary as long as he is on their roster.

IIRC. anyway.

Quote:Lewis isn't really a receiving TE and they should be getting Jones back next week. Would the Packers benefit from having Lewis on their roster? Yes, but I don't think they'd be willing to part with draft pick(s) and have that contract on the books.

Also Detroit isn't known for being savvy, so we completely lucked into that trade.
You make a great point. Since they are relying more on the run this season with Eddie Lacy and Johnathn Franklin, then Marcedes Lewis would be valuable to a football team like the Packers. For a 5th rounder it would be fair for both sides in my opinion.

And for you guys that dont think were dumping players that arent in our future then you are mistaking. We are 0-7. Like the great Al Davis said from the Raiders...every player is up for trade.

Well, the above is what we SHOULD be doing.

We'll see by Oct 29 at 4pm if Caldwell is smart or not.

Haha, thats right. Marcedes is a GRRRRRRRRRRRREAT blocker right?? Thats what they continually try to sell us....

So, yeah, Considering GB's recent running game, its another reason why GB might see a Marcedes deal as a good thing.

You're right about the dead money. It wouldn't be carried over the team that receives the player.

No one here is, or should be, saying that the trade shouldn't happen, just that it won't happen for a myriad of reasons. Mainly because of how the Packers operate.

Tony Scheffler has been released from the Lions. So the Packers could go that route if they really want a veteran presence at TE.

Doesnt seem like a packers move. They will sign some lesser TE and he will look competent blocking in the running game and Rodgers is good enough to get him involved enough in the passing game to keep defenses honest.

Maybe the point made about Marcedes being a run blocker for them given their new reliance on the running game but id be more inclined to think the Pack would just draft another TE with the same pick they would have given us and let Rodgers make him look All Pro too. They are way too patient and stingy with picks IMO to make a move for Marcedes.

Though let it be known id take either a 4th or a 5th + 7th

....If Caldwell makes 0 trades between now & the deadline, considering where we are in the scheme of things, then yeah, thats not doing a good job.

Will you then root for us to lose every game until we fire him?

It would not be a good job by Caldwell to sit on this roster and make 0 moves between now and the trade deadline to accumulate some more picks for veterans. Thats just the truth.

It also takes 2 to trade, and we don't have many enticing players to offer up.

We have some veterans who could absolutely help certain contending teams fill holes at the moment.

Lewis is so awful and overpaid that I am going to be upset if we don't get draft picks for him.
