What's there to study? There's enough evidence out there for the vast majority of jurisdictions to recognize its effectiveness.

The study on how it will affect people's wallets, particularly those that profit DIRECTLY from marijuana being illegal. Ex: Privately owned for profit jails.

 

Its extremely profitable to a lot of rich people to keep marijuana as a schedule 1 drug(the same group as Heroin, ecstasy, LSD..etc).

All studies have been on people who don't have to get random drug tests or risk losing four paychecks. The NFL and NFLPA need to tackle (pun intended) that situation if medical marijuana use for players is approved.

It is like when I am walking around all day on vacation my legs are sore the next day if I don't get in a hot tub, I guess. Certainly this is something the NFL and NFLPA would want to strictly control for legal reasons.


The big concern here is how to prevent NFC West and AFC West players from using marijuana as a recreational drug by getting prescriptions.

Important talking points include whether players should be suspended for smoking pot in Indiana, where it would get them arrested, but not Colorado.

 

My personal feeling is players need to be held accountable for recreational use of the drug regardless of the state law where it is smoked.

I hope this isn't news to you--- but the idea that you must actually be in pain to get a doctor to write that script is naieve. Doctors will write it just for the asking.


"Medicinal weed" is kind of a formality to "trick" those loud and righteous citizens who oppose "drug legalization". IMHO "medicinal weed" is the necessary stepping stone to legalizing "recreational weed". See Colorado; and now California and others.


The NFL is inevitably going to have to address marijuana somehow as legalization takes off.

Colorado and California voters approved recreational weed.

 

Doctors might do that for average citizens in their licensed states, but they are not bound by a CBA and treating patients who would be forced out of work for a month if weed is found after random drug testing. If the NFL and NFLPA approve medical use of weed, they will have to be very strict about making sure players really need it. That is a significant difference here.

 

There are five years left on the current CBA. Marijuana will be one of the issues discussed during negotiations for the next one.
