What is broken with the run defense?

#21

Watch what's happening in the trenches on running downs. The Titans and Jets were blowing open holes with relative ease. It wasn't as bad with the Rams, but with Gurley being so good their OL was plenty effective against our DL. In our wins, we're handing things up front.

That said, it's not like you really want to replace anyone because our pass rush has been very effective. The Titans managed to snuff our our pass rush, but they've been successful against everyone else.

I think we need one of those massive tree-stump defensive tackles who can take on a double team and not be moved. Someone about 6-3, 340.

The gap issues were only one game.

The biggest reason we get gashed is because our edge is selling out for pressure. They are emphasizing getting upfield over holding point, which I'm fine with as long as they keep making plays. Abry Jones not moving people doesn't help.

Jones is good... but not Roy Miller good.
Yannick has never been really good against the run.
Running out of nickel takes Poz off the field.

It ain't just one thing... and I don't think it's really fixable outside of gap assignments...
Might just be one of those things the team has to work through, throughout the season.

Um, how many 340-pound DL are in the NFL? And how many of those players are equally great against the run and pass?

Boselli on Monday night was saying Abry Jones had a bad game.I think the team messed up in the off-season by not resigning Miller and giving Jones a contract

This is ironic. When Roy Miller was on injured reserve many posters believed Abry Jones was an upgrade and wanted us to re-sign him and cut Miller.

The reasons we cut Miller probably included his Achilles tendon tear, which we all know players usually don't make a full comeback from - especially at that age.

It's very simple. They are consistently missing their gap assignments and we get burned with big runs.

We also need a run stuffing DT, too many pass rushing DTs and Abry Jones.

There is a difference between having too many pass rushers and not enough run stuffers. It is possible to have guys who can do both.

Guys...it's not bc they don't weigh enough, fast enough, etc.

They are just getting beat up front.

Why are we getting beat up front more than other teams? Is it the scheme? The coaches Doug Marrone hired?

Sign Stroud and Henderson

Ngakoue - Stroud - Henderson - Campbell

The run defense is not just a DL problem.

All of our depth players on the DL are geared towards pass rushing.

Our LBs aren't as disciplined as they could be.

Though I'd add that Jones is a bit of downgrade from Miller as a run stuffer  -  and I'd caveat your penultimate statement with the fact that Smoot is looking pretty strong against the run, though he's displaying some typical rookie inconsistency.

It's a chess match. Could be play calls. Maybe we need to focus more on run blitzing. But then you risk getting beat deep.

We need more man to man with a more conventional 4-3 scheme. It's not the coaches, they can't tackle guys. It's players not plays.

I thought we are doing exactly that now.

Bottom line is guys have to do a better job. We have the guys to make it happen. It's not bc they are geared for pass rush. We don't have a bunch of DPRs. Campbell can stop the run. Fowler excels at it. Yannick can hold his own. Jones is a run stuffer.

They just getting whipped

You're right, I forgot about Smoot. I was thinking more along the lines of the inside fellas. Day, etc.

Honestly Ngakoue hasn't been bad at stopping the run. I can't think of many times where he's been run at where he's in position to make a stop because he's usually driving his guy into the QB.
