Caldwell - I understand the premise and it makes some sense, but who do you go after? I don't see them giving any other former GM's a second change, which would mean giving a guy a new chance. That generally means a long rebuild. Here is a good article at ones in the discussion. Honestly, most of them that move the needle have been refusing interviews for a while.

Bortles - He has severely underperformed this year, no doubt. Do you wish he got better this year? Yes. He has major issues and he was always a major project, but there are very few good options next year. Jags should still bring him back, but make it very clear all off season that he will have to compete for the starter. Make that clear to the coach as well. If Caldwell cannot deal with that then you let him go as well.

No that doesn't mean next year is "dead year". Just the past 2 years alone, we have seen many teams win despite average play at QB. And in the division, even next year that will likely be enough to challenge for the division. (Houston will still be stuck with Osweiller, Colts have too many holes to fix in 1 year, and Titans just beat 3 bad, poorly coached teams).

A good coach can win despite that. Heck, a number of them this year were hired into situations with questionable QB options and still done okay.

Here is my reasoning:

I think we are all in agreement that Gus needs to go. The reasons are numerous and have been talked about countless times.

I personally have seen enough from Blake Bortles. I would let him play out the rest of this year. By the end of this year, he will have ~3 years of experience and game tape to really evaluate him. I would be very aggressive in free agency and/or the NFL draft to get my next QB. It doesn't have to be the next "franchise QB"... He will be under contract, so we don't need to just cut him for the sake of cutting him. Maybe we trade him, maybe he's the backup, it doesn't matter. But he should not be on the field playing football as our primary option. If he is, the best we can hope for is another 5-7 win year in year 5 of the rebuild. He is a QB who is just as flawed now as he was as a senior in college. He was a project that just flat out did not work out. The sooner we can see that with objectivity, the faster we will get a winner.

Now, Caldwell seems to be a guy a lot of fans are still OK with. I would consider keeping him but I simply don't trust him with regards to the QB. I think Caldwell plays favorites and will sink or swim with his own guys (his own draft picks). He will keep Bortles as the starting QB in 2017 which I think will be another lost year for us. Blake will "earn it" because Dave will not provide him with adequate competition. To prevent that from happening, the three amigos all need to go, and they all need to go at the same time.

Caldwell has done well with some selections, but he has missed on the most important: The head coach. His entire first draft class. His QB. There are other examples. He's had nice selections as well, but I think any reasonable GM would've done just as well if not better with the resources he was given 4 years ago.

Before you start crying about "not wanting to start from scratch"... we don't have to and we will not. Khan should interview GMs and coaches who say that this roster is a roster they can win with. You don't give them a 4 year plan. We have enough talent on both sides of the ball to be at least average with average QB play. I guarantee you there are coaches out there that would love this job (just like any other job) and can actually win with this team NOW. There will not be any mass exodus of players. A new set of eyes will come in and objectively look at what we have. Suddenly guys like Joeckel and Bortles are not playing for this team anymore. Guys who have performed, like Linder, Telvin, Ramsey, etc of course stay.

We all want a winner in Jacksonville. I know this year is lost already. Firing Olson and promoting Gus Jr. isn't going to solve anything. It was a blame game, a shift away from what the real problem is: The entire state of this franchise. For that, Dave, Gus, and Bortles are responsible.

i'll be honest, I didn't know who Dave Caldwell was before we started our interview process. The league is full of young up and comers who are due to get their shot at being GM. I don't think Caldwell has done anything special. He's been average at best. IF he is married to Bortles, he needs to go. If he mans up and brings in real competition, then I wouldn't be against keeping him around.

I really thought they knew what they were doing... I wasn't even drinking. Caldwell is on the hot seat with Gus in my opinion. Blake is terrible.

David Garrard took us deep into the playoffs against the undefeated Patriots throwing to two crackheads. And was light years better than Bortles in 08 and 09 with much less talent than Beer Gut has now. So far, not in Garrard or Leftwich's league, maybe a tad better than Fetal Position Gabbert. Maybe.

This. Thank you. Bortles couldn't carry Garrard's jock strap. He accomplished things on the field that blake couldn't even dream of.

How do you explain our BS defense when we have a defensive-minded head coach... Coach isn't engaged that's why... he's too busy spouting positive hype. All the high draft picks and big free agents we've brought in and we can't find even one star, ok maybe Jalen, but we just have lousy skills when it comes to using high draft picks and evaluating talent in general. Old Mike Mularkey would have given us a more competitive team, at least he had a decent offensive plays. Let's get a head coach that can put together an offense and assemble an NFL caliber O line, line one up now before all the good ones find better opportunities with an NFL team that is permanently stuck under .500.

I hate to say it - but totally agree with the OP. Another complete rebuild is needed. Keep BB5 as the backup QB, OR draft his replacement and let BB5 start one more year while his replacement sits on the bench. Get rid of the entire coaching staff. Get rid of Dave. Way too many top 5 picks have been busts - and that is looking more and more like Fowler is included. Too many free agent busts as well.

Dave is ultimately overall responsible for putting this team together and well - it's the worst it's ever been. That falls on his shoulders. He's failed miserably.
