Keys to Beating New England

#21

Pressure on Brady obviously. I hope we don't sit back in a zone and let him pick us apart.

I would also love to see two 15 minute drives that result in touchdowns. One in each half.

Let's not forget that their defense isn't that great BUT their coach is. He is going to try to take away what we do best on offense, so we need to be creative.

As far as defense goes, if you pressure Tom up the middle, he is a different quarterback. I watched what Brady did to the tacks yesterday, and while we aren't the tacks, Ben threw for a ton on us today. I am looking forward to this matchup and think we have a legit shot at beating them. I hope the coaches go back and focus on how Miami beat them near the end of the season.

Easier said than done. That's what every team has tried to do for the last 17 years. Very few succeed. Pittsburgh put up 42 points today and the Patriots' offense is more potent. NE's D is also better than Buffalo's, (and Pitt's) which held the Jags to 10 points. Jags will have to play mistake free all game.

If the Jags play zone, this game will be over very quickly. They need to play man and jam the small NE receivers at the line. The only way to stop Gronk is to double team him. That leaves someone open.

Without going back to read your entire post again (so I apologize if you've already mentioned these). How healthy will Fournette be? Which Bortles will show up? What will the temperature be? This is NE after all. Trip Tomlin insists that the Patriots have a secret machine that controls the weather...

Pats fan here. First off let me say how STUPID it was for the Steelers to look past you guys. I have no idea why they just assumed they would win. The Patriots certainly won't do the same. You obviously have a very talented team.

As for how to beat the Patriots you need to do a few things.

#1 Get pressure on Brady with 4 while stopping the run. If you send only 4 and drop 7 Brady will audible to a run until you prove you can stop it with 4 guys and your LBs 5 yards deep.
#2 Cover in man. Brady tends to crush zone. Our WRs are good but not great talents really. They can be taken away man to man with your DBs a fair amount I think.
#3 Limit the RBs and Gronk. There is no solution to stop Gronk 1v1. You need to bracket him to limit him. If you put too many guys on Gronk it will create a weakness. The way to deal with Gronk is to accept the loss of the mismatch but not letting it kill you and don't let other players go off. The RBs are going to be hard for your team to deal with I think. If Rex Burkhead is back it will be even harder. White/Lewis alone are dangerous enough and I expect them to go with that a lot.

Do those 3 things on D and you will slow the Pats offense down. On Offense you need to...

#4 Give up the run up the middle. The Pats won't give it to you. Once you realize it won't work you need to quickly walk away from it except for very short downs. Focus on runs to the outside as they have a better chance.
#5 Patients between the 20s and force the issue in the redzone. The Pats give up a lot of yards but not points. You can get into the redzone playing safe but once there guys won't usually be open. If you get a 1 on 1 challenge the CBs with a 50/50 ball. The Patriots CBs aren't great at making solo plays isolated.
#6 FGs will not help you. Settle for them only when needed. You are probably not going to win a straight up game and so need to take a few measured risk. 4th and 1 in FG range is a go for first situation. To win you need to put up multiple TDs. I'd Guess you'd need 30 points most likely and maybe more. FGs just won't be enough.

That is how I see it. BTW. Vegas has the spread at 9 points. Seems kind of large to me. I don't know what you are still not getting any respect.

You don't Blitz Brady. You need to be able to get pressured on him with only your front four, in my opinion.

Keep Brady off the field. Much like we did today except we gave up big play after big play when they came back on the field. Sacksonville needs to show up. Missed em this week. We need to find a way to generate an interior pass rush. Campbell/Dareus.
No pain, no gain.

We'll see hot it plays out but I believe we are the team best built to beat the Patriots. The D Line is important but more importantly is our secondary. Brady is going to use quick passes to counter the rush...we'll have to see how our pass defense does.

This should be fun!

If we don't make Brady move off his spot we're toast.

Just look at what Miami did.
No pain, no gain.

I want to see Campbell and Malik lined up inside almost exclusively this game on long 3rd downs. Anything more than 3rd and 5 I want Fowler/Jackson/Campbell/Ngakoue. Dareus and Malik/Campbell rotating inside on the 1st and 2nd down plays. I think if we can get pressure and the run game gets going I love our chances. If good Blake shows up, I think we take the W.

We gotta put Bouye on Gronk and have guys chipping him constantly. Also bracket him in coverage. Mix it up with Ramsey on him too.

Brady is too good at getting rid of the ball and finding someone for a 5 yard gain. Brady is also better now against pressure than when he was younger. Denver beat him up like 20+ times in one game, and it still came down to the final possession. I think stopping the running backs when they run routes will be key. Just ask Atlanta how they faired against White.

I agree with this. What makes the Patriots so great is that they have so many ways that they can beat you. Belichek will find any weaknesses in the defense and Brady will continue to exploit this. I really hope Gipson is back because I could see Brady going at Wilson due to his inexperience. To the guy's credit, he made a few great plays yesterday in relief of Gipson, who was badly beaten earlier in the game by Bryant.

Well if Fournette can stop hurting his ankle we'd be in good shape. The offensive line did well against their starting defensive line in the preseason opener... probably doesn't mean anything but still. We are going to have to play with some passion and grit for 60 minutes. Complimentary and disciplined football in all phases for 60 minutes. That is the goal. The Patriots don't lose unless Brady turns the ball over. We have to want it for 60 minutes.
No pain, no gain.

Brady will pick any defense apart if he is not pressured, regardless of the number in coverage or coming after him. The key is to get pressure on him; this often is the recipe for the Pat's previous defeats. Hopefully, the Jags can do it rushing 4, but they will likely need to throw in an occasional blitz.

For the Jag's offense going at the Pats, I hope they stay more aggressive and balanced, as we saw in Pittsburgh. I do not want to see an overly conservative run and punt game.

You would need to look at the 2015 post season game that they lost to Denver to get a feel for what we need to do on offense and defense. You can give up the yardage all you want. You can bend. Just don't break. And you have to make them one dimensional. So that means they must stop Lewis and Burkhead in the running game early and often.

We have the corners for this game. Ramsey and Bouye are basically Talib and Harris from 2015. If they can keep Cooks and Hogan in check and pressure Brady up the middle they should be able to funnel most of his looks and passes towards the middle of the field. That's where we should see a lot of tip drills on defense. I expect this defense to pick Brady off at least twice. It's the only way you can win. Pressure also plays a huge role. You can't just sit back and let him dink and dunk you to death.

We seldom blitzed yesterday against Big Ben and he made us pay for it. Brady will do the same if you give him all day. You cannot be afraid to blitz him. You just can't be. Tom Coughlin knows that more than anybody having beat them twice. Especially with Ramsey and Bouye in this game. But that's how we win.

1. Force them to be one dimensional
2. Blitz his [BLEEP] on defense
3. Force them to look to the middle of the field instead of the outside
4. Make plays on the ball

On offense, for us? K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple Stupid. Nothing fancy. You run the football down their throats and you go to the play action game early and often just like you did yesterday to get the defense away from the box. Take 1 - 2 shots in the first half and the second half if needed but don't get cute. Getting cute with New England is the surest way to lose. They're very disciplined. You're not going to out smart them too much. So you just need to line up man for man and get physical and nasty with them. That's how Denver won. That's how we will win it.

If the front 4 isn't getting pressure send more. Our CB's can handle them on the outside. Just don't get beat by Dion Lewis underneath or Gronk down the middle.
No pain, no gain.
