Here's a little secret: When you sign a quarterback to a $54 million contract a few weeks after he had two fantastic games in the playoffs against top level competition, you don't then start signing other players to directly compete against him. That would be sending all the wrong messages; "Here's $26.5 million guaranteed, and by the way, we still don't think you're going to be the man in future so we're going to pay/draft this other dude as well."

They should've never signed him to the extension. Two fantastic games or not, the guy had a history of erratic and uneven play throughout his career. Extension or not, when you have a QB like this, you better have a good backup plan. We had none. Message or not, by not signing some QB competition, we really screwed ourselves. If the QB you have is such a mental case that a little competition is gonna break him, you have the wrong QB. There is just no arguing this point. This is a QB driven league. Failure at that position leads to failure of the team in one way or another.

And how do you suppose to bring in viable competition? You're not going to spend a first round pick on a QB if you just spent $54M on your starter, not even at #29. And drafting one in the later rounds isn't going to bring in the immediate competition you want. And the team was tight against the cap so bringing in someone through FA wasn't going to happen either considering a QB like Case Keenum got an $18M/year contract.

When you commit to a #1 QB, you commit to them and you use your resources to build a team around him, not to bring in a backup plan. The only mistake in this whole ordeal was committing to Bortles in the first place, back when they choose to take up his fifth year option. Luckily, with the way his contract is structured and the high draft pick we have now, that mistake is easily remedied.

Tom Coughlin had to approve it, people. And I'm still waiting on the "he was talked into it" crowd to show me a shred of evidence to support that rumor.  Smells like a load of crap to me.
Tom also gets a share of the blame in the Fournette pick and the neglect of the O-Line.

Tom's recent arrival and past history should give him at least one mulligan. It's not crime to try to get the next Fred Taylor. Fournette is big and fast as all get out.

It may not be a crime but it's certainly bad planning. Taking him over a QB in a historically good RB class is woeful decision making

Coughlin deserves some heat for this. We gave him and the front office a pass because we finally made it back to the play-offs. The extension for Bortles made sense. I just think it's hard to get over the conservative approach in that AFCC loss.

As DF pointed out. Bortles played well in two play-off games. And then we saw him get handcuffed by the coaching staff just before half time in that loss. That's where a lot of this grief is coming from with this fan base right now.

Nobody wanted Bortles to fail. I was pulling for that kid this year. We all got hyped up after that win against New England. And then little by little. All of the pieces of Armor that Bortles had around him on offense started falling off. He loses his horses up front. He loses his work horse in the backfield. And then he loses his best receiver and receiving threat at tight end.

Did he get a raw deal? Maybe. Did Hackett get a raw deal? Maybe. But one good season out of five appearances is just not enough to justify the extension. Complacency will kill you in any major sport. And that's my fear right now with Khan. What's he going to do in the next few weeks? Do we chance it again with Marrone? Or do we move on in a different direction?

At this point I prefer we move on. I have seen enough.

If Tom thought Fournette could be the next Fred Taylor then all that does is add to his fireable resume. Their similarities are that they are both big for RBs, end of list.

At some point you just have to let go of what you thought should happen and live in what is happening.
 

We were sitting pretty in the off season all right. All the pieces in place for a Super Bowl run. Plus, we upgraded the OLine and picked up a few extras for the big D. Did we really need ARob? We had Lee, Cole and Westbrook. With Moncrief and a couple of tight ends plus Grant and Yeldon to catch #5’s passes as well as bulldozer Fournette - yep, we seemed pat!

We had thought of everything! Except for the fact that all the other great football minds knew what we had, too. The best surprise is no surprise we thought. We will do it our way. Get out of our way already, we thought.

It was a great idea that never got off the ground. Along the way survival of the fittest raised its ugly head....

The rest is history. Except we have to live it out for a few more games then wait expectantly for answers and solutions. Some we will celebrate. Others we will loathe.

Honestly, the only way this team was going to improve the QB situation this past off-season was by absolutely murdering the cap for the foreseeable future and that just wasn't going to happen. Coughlin is a smart man, he knows why got fired after the 2002 and he already avoided the same mistake when he was in New York and now he's continuing that trend here as well. 

They'll most likely draft a new QB in 2019, hope it's not a bust, and take advantage of that sweet rookie contract to lock up the young stars on defense.

Exactly.  All these hand wringing and 20/20 hindsight post after last years success and this years disappointment are pointless.  The organization attempted to build on last years success with the pieces we had, added a few perceived improvements, rolled the dice and lost.  Eleven months ago no one was complaining about the state of the franchise.

Everyone was on a "high" after last season.....and BB5 had his wrist fixed that he had been a nuisance.
He got his extension and some were ok with it and some weren't.
Who knew that when he came back.....he would be not Bortles 2.0 we had seen in the 2017 season but Bortles 1.0
...A nice guy but, a tongue out, duck throwing, terrible passing quarterback.
Maybe he should have left his wrist alone.

Coughlin is more to blame here than anyone. If he truly is the end all be all, he deserves the blame.

or TC is smarter then any of us here and knows more about football then us overweight armchair GMs. The 3 QBs who were FA everyone wanted where signed to massive contracts 2 didnt finish the season and the 3rd is haveing a worse season then Blake with better weapons. TC signing BB for the contract he did hedged his bets. If we didnt sign him and we did not have injuries and the last 3 quartrers of the season were like the first quarter we would need to resign BB and pay him Carr money or more. The season turned out bad and it looks like we made a bad deal but in then end it was the best deal to keep a possible SB winning QB (yes one fast whistle and coweredly coaches kept us from winning the SB and BB being a SB winning QB). I still think if they get the right coaches in here we still could get back to the playoffs with BB. I just dont see any FA worth paying that kind of money for and kessler deffinatly aint it and the draft class isnt it either.

He should have never gave that extension. Two games does not a complete career turnaround make.

What you fail to understand that if they did not give him the extension, and (i know it didnt ) if we had won the division and made it to the playoffs. WE would be Paying him next year a much much much larger contract. They took a chance so they could lock him up if he performed. and the first quarter of the season he did preform. if the injuries didnt take us out and the defense didnt lose so many games for us he would still be the starting QB.
