We can't trade for Foles, because he's a free agent. I'd love to have him, but I wonder if we have the cap space. And he may not want to go to a team that views him as a transition QB.

I too think we need to stay away from Haskins, like I said in another thread I cant think of any Urban Meyer QB's that went on to have a really good NFL career and that's including his time in Florida.

I think it depends on what he does in the Playoffs.  If he leads them to another SB he isnt going anywhere

It would be a tough decision but if Foles leads them to another Super Bowl how can he not be their QB going forward?  I think they’d have to strongly consider trading Wentz for a king’s ransom in that scenario.

They don't really have to trade Wentz. He's on a rookie contract and isn't making that much money at all. If they re-signed Foles, they could hang onto Wentz until his contract was about to run out and then trade him for a boatload. He's signed through 2019 though, so they could probably keep him until the trade deadline in 2019.

Foles does have an option in his contract. Even if Philly decides to pick it up, he can still void it and go to free agency. Be interesting to see what happens, especially if he leads them deep into the playoffs again. Judging by his history, I don't know how confident I'd be in him being successful outside of Philly.

Well, technically, I don't think any player that hasn't been released is a free agent until March 14th. 
So he's an eagle for ten more weeks unless they exercise the option or strike a new deal.

It all depends on what happens in the playoffs.  

If Foles leads them to another Super Bowl, you can bet they will not let him go without compensation, even if that means using the franchise tag on him if necessary.  

Of course, if Foles goes out and throws multiple pick 6's in the first playoff game and the Eagles get blown out, that's another story.

The Eagles can create the cap room to tag Foles, they just have to cut a few overpaid defenders.  Not much different than the Jaguars.  And right now Foles counts $20M agains the cap next year so tagging him isn't that much more. 

The Eagles have all the leverage in this case.   The only leverage a player has against the franchise tag is holding out, and well, a 30 year old QB isn't going to hold out.  He's not like Bell who is young enough to get away with that.

Those are really the only two options for this team.

This may be the most cap-friendly choice.

Given the choice of the two, Blake at least got us into a postseason. Kessler got us into an endzone once, I believe.

I still believe that the team is going to either cut Bortles or trade him.  A trade is highly unlikely but not out of the question.  I also think that a veteran free agent will be signed to at least a 3 year deal to be the starter.  I seriously doubt that the team would be able to sign a quality veteran to a one year "prove it" deal or a short term "bridge" deal.  Any free agent veteran QB is going to want to sign as a starter, not a backup or "place-holder" contract.  The question is will a veteran free agent want "starter" money or "franchise QB" money?  There is a difference.

The thing is it's going to cost some money to get that free agent which could explain at least in part why the team voided the guarantees on Fournette's current contract.

Going this route gives the team some flexibility regarding the backup position and the draft, especially with the projected weak QB draft class.  They can go with a cheap backup and still focus on BAP in the draft rather than reaching for a QB.
