The elephant in the room -- ARob's struggles

#21

Arob dropped a lead taking td pass vs green bay and it was definitely a catch he made last year multiple times.

If that were to happen on a more consistent basis, then I'd be concerned. Right now, I just chalk it up to [BLEEP] luck.

Yeah. I know he was held all game and whatnot but he still would have made at least a couple of those catches last year. It's only one game though, so I'm not worried.

If pretty sure we were worrying about dropped ARob passes this time last year too, but it worked out ok in the end.

The bigger concern for me is that Blake doesn't seem to be throwing it his way as often.

A-Rob was targeted 15 times in week one. Probably mugged on half of those. A-Rob is just adjusting to the extra attention. If we keep throwing bubble screens, he won't get in a rhythm. He didn't develop his rhythm last year until his big game against Miami, and then went well from there. Just gotta throw it to him and get him going.

It's an elephant that I already talked about. Blake is overthrowing him, or under throwing him and just putting up jump balls. It worked last season but there is now film on Robinson, you play him tight, get physical, and you put a jumper on him, not someone 5 feet 9inches tall.. There was a reply that it works for AJ Green, that Dalton could still throw it up for Green, but Robinson is not Green. Green is ridiculous about coming down with the ball. With AR15 If a defender gets an arm on his chest there is a good chance the play will be broken up.

I think Robinson is frustrated by it, frustrated that Blake expects AR to bail him out on long 3rd downs with jump balls instead of nicely run routes and slants. Instead we have Lee running curls and slants, or the tight ends. Which is fine, but AR also has to get in a groove catching some easy balls early in the game, instead he gets hail mary jump balls in the first half, and in the second half he is expected to be Mr.3rd down. It's not hard to figure out and opposing coaches have.. His struggles are on the coaches primarily, and also Blake to a lesser degree.

ARob is the farthest possible player that is the problem lol.. I'm sure if the Jaguars cut ARob there will be 31 teams calling his agent within the same hour. Maybe 30 because the Browns are  as stupid as us.

Allen Robinson is getting too much attention imho..    Allen Hurns is not getting enough..    nor is JT ..   or Greene for that matter..    and Lee too much..

Last week was a catastrophe..   and we will likely lose again this week if only because we showed sO much weakness, our opponent will beat us with 'confidence' alone..

The entire basis of the team that we have assembled is that no SINGLE player should be #1 …    we have a team full of 'em...

Get the ball to    HURNS ..     he is the 'heart' of the team..   then A-Rob will open up.   And JT will kill 'em..

Last week is the first time since BB was chosen that I really felt a concern…   well, actually, it was in the 4th Q against the Packers..  and we should have won that game..    this is what happens when you lose the opener.  It's THAT important..

All one has to do would be to watch the Pats game from last night..   that is coaching skill, and OC skill..    All I could think to myself was..  "can Shad get McDaniels down here?"      We need the Belichick way...

<div>I think the difference is that opposing coaches are planning for ARob and Bortles now (lets face it, it would be a surprise if they weren't) and the main difference seems to be that they've noticed how effective the pair of them were with deep balls last season and they're trying to take that out.

If's not ARob suddenly losing his ability to find space and catch a ball or Bortles forgetting to throw it to ARob, it's tactical and we must find a way around it.

That might involve using Lee, Hurns and Thomas more, to force them to drop off ARob. Maybe it involves more intermediate throws to ARob. But perhaps most crucially it has to involve running game - and Ivory has to play a big part in that.

If Gus and the coaching team can figure this out, then they've done their job and our offense looks good.

</div>

I agree it's tactical. By "struggling," I didn't mean to suggest that ARob wasn't executing. Granted he did have a drop, but I just meant he was struggling to put up his normal stats.

Oley said that teams are often keeping a S over the top, and that this is forcing him to move ARob to other WR positions in an attempt to get him open. Bortles mentioned that ARob needs to get one-on-one in order to throw it to him, and that they're working on how to do that. But all of this suggests to me that they don't want to throw ARob's direction if they see a double team. That's the part that gets me. Again, Jimmy Smith practically never saw a down without being doubled. They can't let a mere double team take him out as an option. If ARob is truly the elite player we believe him to be, and not merely a borderline top 10 WR, then ARob will make those plays double team or not.

Not concerned as the elephant in the room is the Coaching staff and not ARob.

They're a little past being the elephant in the room though.

Exactly. The "elephant" is always a huge thing that nobody is really talking about. I guess there was another thread on this as a couple posters have mentioned, but I totally missed it. The coaching staff, on the other hand, is being talked about plenty.

It seems that Ivory's sudden illness had a domino effect on the play calling. It doesn't look like TJ's workload has really increased all that much from what it normally be, which is why I suspect the screens were a last ditch effort to make up for Ivory's loss. I doubt they had enough offseason work on the screens to use them as much as they tried to against San DIego. Hopefully Ivory being back will put things back to normal with respect to playcalling, but now we have the OL injuries to complicate things.

Where did I say everything? In the few attempts that Blake has thrown deep to Arob it's been horrible. If you can't see that, I don't know what to tell you

Quote:Maybe if he weren't getting hacked and tackled every time he goes up for a pass. I know the guy is a physically dominant receiver but that should be an advantage, not one that allows the defense free reigns to compensate by playing outside the rules to even the odds.
This. Defenses so far have had free reign on him with little to no penalties and that makes a huge difference. If the defensive players knew they would get penalties they would be less likely to be all over him like flies on a turd. I don't remember this being the issue last year. It's like hunting season and the Jags are in the cross hairs of the referees.

There are other issues as well but this is a big one to me because it means a corrupt officiating crew is allowed to do their thing and basically steer the game the direction they (meaning the League) want it to go.
