It goes without saying that the team has to have a baseline of ability that allows it to get into the playoffs. Vic was fond of the gospel of maximizing the number of opportunities over attempting to maximize for just one opportunity. In that regard I think he's right. It's better to be a good team that always makes the playoffs and keeps a clean cap than to be like the Rams. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

He meant you do your best to build a sustainable roster that consistently makes the playoffs over a few seasons and gets hot, rather then go all in on the poker table like the rams did (01-18-2023, 08:42 PM)SeldomRite Wrote:(01-18-2023, 08:09 PM)NYC4jags Wrote: yeah, that's all it takes. I understand your point as well. The VIC'isms haven't worked out for this franchise because they never got to the sustain and take multiple shots stage. Weave felt pressured to go for broke twice and Khan hasn't really been there yet. Vic was really promoting the stability of the Steeler approach. They really are a top of the league model. We just never got to where we could sniff at making that work.

The irony of Vic is he undervalued players while also claiming players are what matter. He would say players not plays, or dime a dozen about receivers, then turn around and suggest the Jaguars should trade the rights to Trevor away for a bunch of draft picks rather than taking him. Trevor will be the guy holding the window open for the Jaguars over the next 15 years. Gotta take an elite QB when he's staring you in the face. Without one a team won't be able to sustain winning over the long term. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Vic was certainly wrong about Trevor.
Picks for Trevor... that's certainly an interesting thought experiment. After this year, his value would never be higher. How many 1's do you think we could get? Not that it would matter, since whoever got him would likely be picking last each year.
W/O the turnovers against the Chargers, the outcome would remain the same but the score would more reflect the play of our defense. Within the first half of the game we were running curl type routes of which allowed Asante to literally Mug our receivers and get away w/it.
Within the second half of the game we corrected this and ran Post routs and Asante and Co. couldn't keep up w/our receivers. We recognized that the refs were letting us play by not acknowledging certain would be penalties. Game On. WE WIN. NH3...

But we won them all anyway. Of course, 5 of those 12 were against the Chargers.Duh? 42-10 BOOM!! To this layman it seems like either the offense or the defense shows up for a game. There are a few exceptions like Week 3 against the Chargers, but overall it seems to me that our wins have happened because one side of the ball has played great when the other has struggled. Seems like this has been the case for most of our games for the past four years. If both sides play up to their potential, it feels like we should be able to compete with anyone in this league.
