Dang that band sounds good !!!

Reminds me of my trip to Queretaro Mexico when their house band did a great Black Sabbath medley with an 8 piece band.  They were also big on the Doors, Metallica, and Rolling Stones.   I was thinking we don't have bar bands like that anymore here in the US --- heck, a lot of our solo artists don't even play a real guitar anymore as all the instrumental sounds come out of their store bought speaker system and they pretty much serve as professional karaoke singers.

ok ... back on topic -- ooops.

Typically, the reason we can't compete with a Chinese business in a certain sector is because our labor costs are higher.
Our labor costs are higher because our workers have opportunities to do more productive things.
So tariffs could also be appropriate if high unemployment is the main problem in our economy. That is not the case today. When unemployment is low, the possible justifications are national security, worker safety, and climate change impact.
My fellow southpaw Mark Brunell will probably always be my favorite Jaguar.

Well, that and the fact China has about a billion starving people working for rice.

Hence my last sentence above.

I think most Americans do not mind paying a premium for USA built products.

Respectfully disagree.  If this were the case, then we wouldn't see so many foreign cars on the roads today.  I understand many foreign names have manufacturing jobs here but there is an immense amount of foreign cars and other products that are booming in the US.   Just look at Temu ..... people want what they consider great value and that starts with a great price, with an "acceptable" level of quality.   This is pretty much why knockoffs are banned in the US; they'd put our premium  companies like LV and G out of business.

If we allow this cheap Chinese steel into the United States, then the cost of building things like automobiles, skyscrapers, or anything that takes steel becomes much cheaper.  Then American companies would make a lot more money, employ a lot more people, and prices would go down here in the United States.

So letting cheap Chinese steel into the United States could be a tremendous benefit to our economy.  But we have tariffs on Chinese steel, to protect the US steel industry and US steel workers.

If you had the power to do it, would take advantage of this Chinese misfortune, and let their steel flow into the US unimpeded?  It seems like it would be a tremendous benefit for consumers, and a lot of American industries, but might damage the US steel industry.

No.

I would rather ease some of the regulation and red tape that makes production of steel here so expensive.  To go along with that, get rid of the unions that drive the cost of labor up.  Also produce more oil/fuel here which would also ease the cost of transporting and producing the raw steel.

Why bail out China?

As a country we used to have a "can-do" attitude.  When WWII broke out many young men were eager to enlist and join the war effort.  Many young men rather than being "soy boys" dropped their toys (in today's terms would have put down their phones and game consoles) and lied about their age in order to enlist.  In the absence of the men the women went to work in factories (hence the term Rosie the "Riveter") that were converted from producing toasters to producing weapons and other supplies for the war effort.  The people of the country as a whole made many sacrifices and did what needed to be done.  It's why they are called "The Greatest Generation".

That is exactly the kind of attitude that is "Make America Great Again".

This country is already flooded with crap Made in China and other countries. Outsourcing has already done this country no favors on so many levels. You can't even buy dependable products anymore because it's so cheaply made. Well, also because consumerism in this country is out of control so companies build things to be replaced, not to last. There is no reason to release a brand new cellphone every year or every couple of years.

With many factors affecting these things, my simple answer is America first.

The problem is comfort and convenience. Americans are afraid to be uncomfortable, and I say this with no judgement. I am afflicted in the same way. I know it's true, but I don't really have an answer for it.

I'm not certain what the quality is, but I do hear that American guys do go over to China, Thailand, Vietnam and other Asian countries and pay for their products.
