Notes from National Media Writer Andy Benoit of SI on Jags

#21

I may be confusing the NFL and NBA but isn't the salary cap supposed to increase significantly again this offseason?

They will defintely exercise the 5th year on Blake. Arob is not going anywhere (franchise tag if necessary but he will get a nice extension). Linder and Smith will be get extensions as well. Our salary cap is very, very healthy so these contracts should not be a problem. Once Blake gets his mega deal, that's when we need to worry about other guys getting their extension.

Money talks but these young guys need to realize that if they stay together, they can do special things.

I hope if we have to tag Allen Robinson, it does not become a Von Miller situation.

Something has to go wrong for us to franchise tag him. Him and Telvin are the next two getting an extension, and our cap is healthy.

Don't forget Linder.

My god I hope this is Pozs last year. Old, slow and not what the current LB Style is at all.

Who would you rather have as Myles Jack's backup? Poz still will be a valuable team member in that role.

Will be take backup type money? Doubt it. He will most likely move on and so should we.

If he wants to stay on the team, yes. Some players do that. He likes being a Jaguar.

Quote:I agree about Poz.  They are grooming Jack to take over at MLB and if healthy, he might be the starter by October.  They will probably stick Pullard on the PS to be Jack's backup in 2017.  This could also be the end for Marks.  Malik has taken his position and they have Day and Bennett that could be backups in 2017.  I think they hide Day on the DL this season and Bennett takes the last DL spot.

I think Parnell and Odrick will be around a few more years.

Where you said, "I think they hid Day on the DL...", did you by chance mean IR?

Considering how they extended Hurns at the first available opportunity, you can count on them doing the same for ARob next year. I can't imagine it coming down to the team having to tag him in 2018.

If you want to fret about a contract, consider Blake's next contract.

Blake probably will get the fifth year extension for 2018.

Quote:Tweet from Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) - #Jaguars Notes: Bortles a budding star QB, but must become much more consistent. Accuracy an issue. So is predetermining throws.

https://twitter.com/Andy_Benoit/status/7...8495677442

I'm not sure why he thinks Blake needs to predetermine throws better, but I certainly understand the accuracy remark. He's accurate enough with these WRs to make the scheme work, but there's been plenty of room for improvement here this preseason.

Tweet from Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) - #Jaguars Notes: Bortles good escape ability but is still willing to move with patience and nuance in the pocket. A real positive.

https://twitter.com/Andy_Benoit/status/7...3666934784

I noticed this about Blake in his rookie season, and it's one of the reasons I've always known he'll do well.

Tweet from Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) - #Jaguars Notes: At its best, Bortles’s arm as good as almost anyone in the NFL.

https://twitter.com/Andy_Benoit/status/7...5276147712

I guess if you could overlook that wobble.

Tweet from Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) - #Jaguars Notes: Bortles a bit of a methodical thrower. One reason why Jags feature so many slower-developing downfield routes.

https://twitter.com/Andy_Benoit/status/7...2574568448

He does have a slow release compared to someone like Mariota... heck, even compared to Gabbert... but it's plenty fast enough. It's not like it's Leftwich slow.

Tweet from Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) - #Jaguars Notes: this offense as vertical as any in the NFL. Tied w/ Saints for NFL-high 72 passes of 20 or more yds last yr.

https://twitter.com/Andy_Benoit/status/7...1432029184

Oley is a fooball god.

Tweet from Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) - #Jaguars Notes: along with Redskins, Jags have the NFL’s best first down play-action game. A huge component of their attack.

https://twitter.com/Andy_Benoit/status/7...6236470272

The Redskins sure do look good this year. I like hearing this about the Jaguars.

Tweet from Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) - #Jaguars Notes: a vertical passing attack also suits big, longer-striding WRs Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns well.

https://twitter.com/Andy_Benoit/status/7...1299854336

...and Arrelious Benn should he make the roster.

Tweet from Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) - #Jaguars Notes: would expect more from TE Thomas this yr. Has had a yr in the scheme now, healthy this offseason. Good fit for JAX pass game

https://twitter.com/Andy_Benoit/status/7...4810334212

I'm thinking 3rd Pro Bowl for Julius.

Tweet from Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) - #Jaguars Notes: T.J. Yeldon can be a top 5 RB. Won’t be this yr (Ivory will steal some production), but skill set is there.

https://twitter.com/Andy_Benoit/status/7...3950182400

Wow...really?

Tweet from Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) - #Jaguars Notes: Yeldon light feet, excellent short-area lateral agility. He’s Le’Veon Bell with less polish and less speed.

https://twitter.com/Andy_Benoit/status/7...0729917441

I'm am liking the Jaguars two-headed monster at RB.

Tweet from Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) - #Jaguars Notes: Hard to imagine Joeckel holding onto LT job. Really poor anchor and unsteady hands. Beachum better.

https://twitter.com/Andy_Benoit/status/7...1606390785

Beachum is going to have to choke hard to lose the starting gig.

Tweet from Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) - #Jaguars Notes: RG Cann encouraging improvements as a rookie in ’15. Eager to see him in '16.

https://twitter.com/Andy_Benoit/status/7...7844488192

Cann is a beacon of consistency and stability. The right side of the Jaguars OL from Linder to Parnell appears set for years to come.

Why? Just give him a new deal in the offseason. Why wait another year to extend him?

There is a reason teams have that option: sometimes they need it.

Who cares about what some teams might need? This is about the Jaguars and ARob. We know we have an elite WR in ARob. Other teams might not know as much about their players.
