I assume it's a rhetorical question, because the answer is a fairly obvious "yes".

 

Debt (or surplus) is the product of two factors, income and expense.  A change to either without an offsetting modification to the other results in a corresponding increase or decrease to the debt.

Something is wrong with your figures.  Assuming that you are talking gross income, a single filer making $47k - $54k doesn't even pay $8000.00 per year in taxes now.
