Bears release OG Matt Slauson

Quote:He was most likely cut because they're going with a youth movement.

Seems to be more than that involved.

Not really, they drafted his replacement. Bears fans are not happy. We can use him as a stop gap.

I know but there are rumours that his poor health was the deciding factor,he would be a good signing though.

I can hear the whining starting to seep thru already!

If Beachum takes over at LT, what about dropping Joeckel and picking up Slauson? It's gotta be an upgrade.

He played 16 games at C/LG last year.

I would really like to bring him in. Seems like a no-brainer.

Some of the comments from writers who cover the Bears cement this even further for me:

Quote:

"Slauson was a leader, a glue guy, the exact kind of player Pace and coach John Fox repeatedly talk about building around."

Quote:

"Smart? Slauson was that. Tough? Check. Dependable? Check. Unselfish, passionate and fully bought in? Check, check and check."
Quote:" If there’s a game that typified Slauson’s time as a Bear, it was Week 4 last season. Three snaps into the day, center Will Montgomery snapped his fibula. Suddenly, faced with an emergency, Slauson moved to center. He hadn’t taken a snap there in preseason action and had fewer than a dozen reps at the position throughout organized team activities, mini-camp and training camp. Yet without complaining, without flinching, Slauson dug in, held his own and helped the Bears to their first win."

And perhaps most importantly:

Quote:"And his recap the next day on how he decompressed? “Had a couple beers,” Slauson said. “And then a couple more."

Still not sold on Joeckel at guard, Bowanko at center, or Bernadeau in general. Bowanko/Bernadeau provide good depth but are they high level starting quality?

If he's healthy, it makes a ton of sense.

Word is, he doesn't move well enough at the second level for their scheme anymore.

I'm sure he moves better than Joeckel.

When they have no time,  they think about it!

When they go down hard, they think about it!

Just watch Peyton, Andrew, Caep even Mr. Bundchen.

I'm sure he's looking for a starting gig with his background.  Not sure Jags would be his desired landing spot, given the current roster.  I think he'd beat out someone for the other guard spot, but it's not guaranteed.
