Extend Allen Hurns' Contract Now Or Wait?
|
Quote:I voted wait. With the mindset of keep them hungry. If he balls out similarly again this year then the team will have to pay the premium. I would not be opposed to what ever the team does. He is a professional in every way and a tough son a a gun on top of it.I really don't think hunger is going to be an issue with this kid. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Sign him up now because he's proven he is a legit number #2 receiver in this league. If we wait until next off season and he has another big year, the price goes up, and he could hit restricted free agency which could result in a cap rich team throwing a hefty contract his way in desperation like teams have done with Marvin Jones and Mohammed Sanu. We get it over with this season that's him signed up for four or five years.
Now.
The cap is only going to get higher so front load the contract as others have suggested and get him cheaper while you can. Bortles and Arob are going to be getting pretty large contracts so I would lock up Hurns now and then focus on the other 2.
Now.
We'll have to sign the whole squad after next season, and that'll take a huge chunk out of our cap. If he takes another step forward this season, we'll be looking at an even bigger contract. We have to keep this team together, it would suck to lose Hurns.
Four years 25mil now or four years 40mil next offseason? Hmmmm....

They've said they'll look at it after the draft. Which is neither now nor after next season, and also makes a lot of sense. So I voted blank #2.
PAY THE MAN!
I can see both sides of this though. I mean if you are a man of your word and you sign a contract you should play until at least near the end of it, but on the other hand he was an unsigned FA whom has far surpassed his original contract at this point. Pay him now is the obvious choice here.
The guy has been playing at a high level, on an UDFA contract. He hasn't been getting 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th round money. You pay him now. Give him a much deserved pay increase, while not having to worry about trying to sign him at a much higher $$ amount in the very near future. Both parties are happy and we keep a much needed core piece.
I'd pay him now. He's worked so hard for this and for our franchise. He's outperformed his current contract. And he's a good guy.

Give him CJ Andersen's contract minus 10%..
Our team has many 'heart-beats' these days.. but it was Allen Hurns that has been the 'lightning in a bottle' for our team.. He deserves to be paid THIS YEAR.. I love so many of our players now.. but it was Hurns' heart that gave us Life . There is perhaps no one I'd rather see with a huge smile on his face than Allen Hurns. He inspires.. that is worth MONEY.
The answer has to be corn. Though Hurns extended be sweet!

I still think wait. Use the money available wisely, even if that means keeping it in the bank. You never know if another Allen Hurns might be available in the draft, or as he was, an un-drafted rookie. He then becomes more valuable either as a highly paid (rightly so) member of the team or worth valuable draft picks. He's still young. Let him earn the big payday that is due to him.

I think it's better to pay him now. It's either a little now or a lot later. I'd rather extend him now at a discount than wait and have the cap continue to rise (along with FA contracts).

The thing is, in my thinking the contract is going to be nearly the same whether he gets it now or at the end of next season. Do you honestly think that he would sign a "cheap" contract right now? By "cheap" I mean a "team friendly" deal that won't break the bank? He's going to want his worth and rightly so, but what value would you place on him as a player right now? You have him under contract for another year that is "cheap" in terms of his worth. At or near the end of the season, see how he pans out and what the worth is and sign him to an appropriate contract... even if it ends up being for a bit more money. If it's too much, then he has the worth of draft picks in a trade deal. The bottom line is, you can't "jump the gun" and start signing players to big deals immediately. They need to earn it. Do you honestly think that he would sign a "cheap" contract right now? Not a cheap contract, but one that is a bit less than what he'd potentially get in a bidding war. What you are suggesting makes sense - but this scenario is nothing new and it happens fairly regularly. Don't discount the weight of a 6 million dollar bonus staring you in the face right now vs an uncertain negotiation a year from now. These kids and agents want to get paid and they aren't always patient about it. I see what you are saying, but if he got hurt this season, he likely won't get that nice, sweetheart deal. It's a gamble on his part, so he does have motivation to sign now.
