Coughlin Culture

Quote:Campbell flatly cited Coughlin as one of the main reasons he chose the Jags, but... maybe it was all about the money.I feel it's probably a bit of both, and not so much just one or the other. He definitely sounded sincere, but we all know money can make a decision a little easier in general. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Here's the thing about Tom Coughlin:
He's all about TEAM. And if you aren't on board with the TEAM, the leash is very, very short. Shorter than Jack's, Mularky's, or Gus's. He is similar to Parcells, Ditka, Lombardi, and the Evil One in that respect. I'm starting to think that there's something to it. There's also something to having guys that don't turn the ball over and a decent QB, too.
You know Tom is in the building when the Cyp, Alu, and Joke era has come to an end
Quote:Here's the thing about Tom Coughlin: You know you had Eli Manning as a quarterback right? So your last post is a shot at Blake please reevaluate that situation. ![]() Quote:You know you had Eli Manning as a quarterback right? So your last post is a shot at Blake please reevaluate that situation.Eli has been a bit of a turnover machine himself. Eli has thrown for as many picks as Bortles did last year 7 times in his career, throwing more than 20 picks 3 times! Not saying Bortles is Eli but if someone can make it work with Bortles, TC can.
Calling Deshawn Watson a future bust since 3/19/17. If I eat crow, I will keep this in here and proclaim JackCity a genius.

Not saying Bortles is Eli but if someone can make it work with Bortles, TC can. That's my point and that's why I don't buy into the report of Coughlin is not a fan of Blake because he truly loved Eli despite his turnover issues. ![]() Quote:The problem with "just get better every day" is that it implies there will always be another day to "get better". No matter how bad you screw up, there's always tomorrow. The problem with "just get better every day" is that not every single person is motivated by the same thing. If you put Tony Boselli as a rookie in the same locker room as Gus, you don't think he'd still be dominant? The guy was ultra competitive. I mean, Jalen was in the same locker room. Did he have a problem? For guys like Tony and Jalen who are self-motivated, it works because they are going to push themselves...win or lose. But then you have guys like Julius, or what about someone like Hugh Douglas who went here to cash in? Their motivation wasn't being their best, their motivation was to collect the paycheck. So to have this mantra work, you also need a leader who will hold people accountable. Factor in the bad talent pool of the team (we can't get rid of guys because we didn't have players to replace them with) and its a snow storm. As I've said...go back to TC's press conference. While he talks about "winning lunch" and it became the buzz word of the press conference, the one story he felt compelled to talk about was the musician (cielo? violin? i can't remember) who was regarded as the best in his profession and even at age 80 or 90+ works hard on his craft every day. Someone who is only concerned about "winning" would stop practicing because he's already "won". But he keeps working to push himself because if he doesn't get better, he might as well be dead (this quote is also used by Bruce Lee btw). So for all the talk about TC's "win lunch", at his core he still preaches getting better every day and competing not against other people, but against yourself...two philosophies that are very much similar to Bradley's. Quote:Campbell flatly cited Coughlin as one of the main reasons he chose the Jags, but... maybe it was all about the money. I think its both. In the past, the money might not have pushed it over the edge. He might have looked at Jacksonville's offer, compared it with Denver and decided to go back home to an established franchise even with the extra 1 or 2 million heading his way. Same with AJ Bouye. But the money was there, and perhaps with TC at the helm, they felt that it would go in the right direction. Quote:I think its both. In the past, the money might not have pushed it over the edge. He might have looked at Jacksonville's offer, compared it with Denver and decided to go back home to an established franchise even with the extra 1 or 2 million heading his way. Same with AJ Bouye.I agree. My post was simply refuting the claim that he came to Jax strictly for the money. I don't believe that's true. I mean, in three separate interviews I've seen/read his answer to "why jacksonville?" is the same and it's: A. Coughlin B. Young ascending defense in need of leadership So - wherever money fits into the equation in Campbell's mind - I don't find it naive to believe he was influenced by the reasons he actually cited as well. Motivation comes not from external sources, it comes from within.

Quote:Also, the concept of getting better every day implies the team is getting better every day. That simply did not happen as it became evident when we were down 35-0 vs the Chargers and 27-0 vs the Titans. Then, in typical Jag fashion, we beat the Colts in a meaningless Week 17 game that people will point to with optimism for the upcoming year. Quote:We lost to the Colts week 17, but we beat the brakes off the Titans week 16 to keep them out of the playoffs and it was glorious. I SHOULD HAVE CLARIFIED MY COLTS REFERENCE. I was referring to a few years back (2011 season) when we beat the Colts in Week 17 which enabled them to get Andrew Luck. Many posters on here thought that was the turning point to our downturn and Gabbert was going to evolve from the few games of success we had late in that year (even though the Colts were tanking). This concept of not winning in Sept & Oct and then squeezing out some December wins under the Gus era was probably the worst thing for this franchise because it gave us false hope. Regarding our win vs the Titans late this season, that win an definitely be marked as a true meaningful late season win since the Titans were in the playoff hunt, we knocked out their QB, then went on to take away any hope they had come in with. In any event, this year may be different (riding momentum) given some of our momentum was established by significant changes to the staff and not simply by beating teams that cashed in their season. Boy oh boy. As many times as TC has mentioned work ethic he had to have been informed by someone close to the team, Marrone? Caldwell? or maybe his own observations of practice film that many players were simply not working hard enough. I hate that and look forward to the change that he and Marrone will demand.

I'll always remember him passing on Haynesworth because of his failed phone interview the day prior to the draft. It takes the right ingredients. Ingredients you can work with, that aren't out just doing their own thing.

I'm sure he's also getting feedback from the staff on players. I think that Marrone has a little bit of Coughlin in him from a head coaching perspective. He'll run things on the field with a heavier hand and a higher expectation on accountability and precision. That message will be consistent from the top down. Let's see how the players respond. First Coughlin as HC who ran a very tight ship, too tight some might say. Then Del Rio who was more of a player's coach but still willing and capable of laying the law down (see Mike Peterson). Skipping Mularkey. And then Bradley who appears to have been the exact opposite of Coughlin, something that clearly hasn't benefited the team. And then Bradley who appears to have been the exact opposite of Coughlin, something that clearly hasn't benefited the team. The Jaguars have been the model of over-correction in its history: TC was a disciplinarian, so we went with Jack who was more a player's coach. TC had a lot of control, so we went with a three-headed monster of Shack, Jack, and contract guy. Jack fired (rumblings of him not doing work towards the end of his tenure, clocking in late, leaving early)....and we go with a details oriented HC in Mularkey. We also went with a single GM approach away from the 3H monster. When Mike and Gene failed, both incredibly dry personality guys... We went with Gus "Do your job!" and Dave "even if he's released"... Mike/Gene had a veteran coaching staff that some felt was "too many chefs in the kitchen" So Gus/Dave went with a young staff... And now we're back to a disciplinarian in Tom/Doug, a more veteran staff, veteran players instead of all young guys. The cycle never ends... Quote:The Jaguars have been the model of over-correction in its history: If Dave had a leadership style that worked and was followed down the line, there would have been no need for Coughlin to impose his style. Tight or loose, either can work. But not without a roadmap or recipe book. We seemed to have good ingredients, but not necessarily ones that were good together or put together the proper way.
