Caldwell on the defense and pass rush
|
Some people on here said Dave Caldwell tried to retain Terrance Knighton and Daryl Smith, but they wanted to play for winners. Who can blame them? We sucked.
I don't know what the deal was with Brandon Marshall. Maybe Caldwell underrated him because we did not have good pass rushers to help him out. The Broncos have plenty of those. Same with Pot Roast. This regime didn't want them.

I guess Marshall was an unproven player at the time. But we let some good players go in the process of "wiping the slate clean". Other than that, we're seeing that its taking some time, but I like the approach.
As far as the topic at hand though... Man! I was fantasizing the other day that Fowler would be the next coming of Bruce Smith. One can dream. We need a thumper in the middle who can cover as well and someone to play the Otto with great aggression. Gimme, like Dave eluded to, another good pass rushing DE opposite of Fowler too.

Quote:Completely untrue. They both wanted to come back to Jacksonville and Caldwell moved on from them. I wonder why. They have been pretty successful on other teams. Oh well, at least he hit a home run on Telvin Smith. Quote:House? IMO, House quietly had a VERY good season for us. Doesn't get talked about nearly enough, but understandably so given our record.

Can't pencil in Fowler ahead of time, he hasn't played a real snap of football yet in the NFL. Far from the "given" so many expect. There needs to be a contingency plan there, too IMO.

That might explain why he was benched for the Bills game. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
That is true. But how nice would it be for us to hit on a big time LEO type DE in FA or in the draft...
...AND Fowler shows up like the top 5 pick that he is? That'd be pretty darn nice.

Quote:House was too inconsistent but I think a pass rush helps his cause That was my impression too. He had one good game followed by a bad game. Quote:Davon House was repeatedly burned by DeAndre Hopkins. That might explain why he was benched for the Bills game.Tell us who completely shut down Hopkins this season? I mean House had him looking average for about 3 quarters that game... Gus benched him but let Gratz play a lot... that is one head scratcher I could never excuse Gus for... Stop. Your analysis of House is weak. He was our best CB this season. Better than Colvin imo. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! Quote:House was to inconsistent but I think a pass rush helps his causePass rush would have helped out everyone... http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/splits/_/i...avon-house I don't see inconsistency in his stats. His best year (first starting year). 4 INTs, a bunch of passes defended. Forced fumble and a recovery... -shrug- haters gonna hate, ainters gonna aint
Quote:Tell us who completely shut down Hopkins this season?...which is more of an indictment of how bad our corners are than anything else. Quote:...which is more of an indictment of how bad our corners are than anything else. How many teams have 3 or 4 good corners? Just sayin. House and Colvin are good enough. With our lack of pass rush we're lucky they didn't give up more than they did. Now depth-wise, yeah Gratz and McCray need some upgrades. Marshall is a project but might have been our 3rd best CB this season. I wouldn't be mad with us signing a guy and drafting a guy at the position. 8 draft selections, we should end up with 3 DBs and 2 DL.
Agree with Kane. House and Colvin should be good enough for next season, although I wouldn't be suprised to see a veteran CB added, and a rookie for depth. Get Gratz off this roster.
D-line, OTTO, and FS will probably be the sole focuses, defensively.

I like Ramsey in the first.
And if somehow Rankins slides enough, I'd be ok trading back into the first for this guy. He'd be a steal at the top of round 2. Address LB in the 3rd, with backside and Oline depth afterwards. I really think our extra 'edge' guys are coming from FA, and not the draft. I can't see Noah Spence being taken in the top 10....
The few game videos that I have seen of Noah Spence, he looks better standing up coming off the edge. Really wish he would add a pass rush counter move, such as a spin, to his arsenal. Wonder if he could be a possible fit for the OTTO spot here? According to the draft trade chart, it would take our 2nd and 3rd to move back into the late 1st round, which I would contemplate if Spence was there.
If you could sign Olivier Vernon and Eric Weddle/2nd tier CB (Mo Claiborne or Norman Carroll from our very own Jax) and then draft Ramsey and Spence in the 1st... LEO - Vernon/Fowler DT - Marks NT - Miller DE - Odrik WLB - Telvin MLB - Poz OTTO - Spence CB - Ramsey (eventually takes over for Weddle) NB - Colvin FS - Weddle SS - Cyp/Sample CB - House |
