Johnny Boozeball in the news again

Speaking as someone who doesn't drink at all:

It's neither illegal, nor against NFL rules, to have an alcoholic drink (or even be drunk) in your off-time, so long as you're not driving. This is true whether you're an alcoholic or not, despite any predilections you may show to making bad decisions with your life. In no way should the Browns have made such an important decision over such a stupid thing.

It is however, illegal to run a rebate fraud scheme like the Browns' owner did a couple of years back, so it was fun to see Pettine consulted with Haslam on the subject.

I have no doubt that the ownership and coaching staff warned him that if he does anything like this again, there will be repercussions...guess it came to be.  I'm on the team's side on this

But what did he do? Get photographed holding a champagne bottle? Did the Browns make him promise he'd never take another drink, ever?

lol exactly, it's not like he's snorting cocaine or was in a bar fight or something, he's literally just lip syncing while holding a bottle.

I know it's a pretty bad MNF game, but I was actually going to watch it to see if Johnny has actually gotten better as a QB.

Now it just might be one of the worst MNF matchups in a long long time.

Clearly the coach was just looking for a reason to bench him.

The coaching staff had already told him to lay low during the bye week and to keep his nose clean after the girlfriend event. Manziel is such a helmet head that he can't stay out of a bar after flushing a learning season down the crapper due to booze problems.

"Booze problems", didn't buy all that, could be wrong but the whole rehab stint was a PR move more than anything.

Oh I am sure he more than dabbled in the booger sugar and god knows what else.

Eh, I mean he's not going to be anything special in the nfl, but this dude has way too much attention surrounding him. He's young, and is allowed to have fun... on his bye week.

However, I'm always happy to see negative things happening to the Browns. Can't stand that franchise (ever since they threw beer bottles)

It's an image problem. Manziel did nothing against the rules. However he represents the Browns, and this is not how the Browns want to be represented. The public perception of the Browns face of the franchise is a guy that would party rather than trying to master his craft. The Browns want this perception to change and manziel is not helping in any way shape or form. The Browns have right to demote manziel, and they are right in burying him on the depth chart.

Well said. There's nothing wrong with having a couple of drinks with the guys after work. But if you're employed by a billion dollar corporation and they ask you to tone it down a little because they don't want to be represented in that light by the public and you don't, they have a right to demote you, suspend you, or fire you. It would be the same for any of us regular joes at our regular jobs.

Quote:Browns Coach Mike Pettine said Johnny Manziel “violated the [team’s] trust” during the bye weekend and essentially failed a test by showing up on social media partying during his time off.

The result, as the Browns announced earlier Tuesday, is that Manziel is going from being announced as the team’s starting quarterback last week to No. 3 for next Monday’s game with the Ravens.

Pettine discussed the issue Tuesday night on the Mike Pettine Show, a team-sponsored show that airs on the Browns’ two flagship radio affiliates. The Manziel news had been announced via a team statement Tuesday afternoon.

“His decisions led us to much disappointment and frustration,” Pettine said on the show.

All they asked was for Manziel to lay low for a week and he couldn't even do that. How are they going to ask him to lead his team and the franchise?

I am sure he will become a Dallas Cowboys problem in the off season.

Quote:Johnny Manziel demoted for lying about video

Johnny Manziel | CLE

(November 26, 2015 12:16 PM EST)

FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reports Johnny Manziel was demoted for lying about when the 30-second video showing him partying was shot.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Browns asked Manziel to stay around the facility and lay low during the bye week. Coach Mike Pettine stressed the reason for Manziel's benching was not the video but a breach of trust, and this backstory helps explain that sentiment. Rapoport also reports the Browns are not closing the door on Manziel at this time. That may be true, but Johnny is quickly running out of chances.

Actions have consequences whether it's legal or not. In this case like a previous poster stated, he was probably warned that if this happened again he would face the consequence of putting his ability to do his job second to his obvious addiction. When you're an addict or an alcoholic it doesn't affect you just in your off time. It affects everything you do all the time. Take it from the daughter of a recovering alcoholic.

Whether Johnny's addiction is to alcohol or stupidity remains to be seen, but both seem to be an issue.
