With all this panic and concern why am I so optimistic?  It was preseason, we didn't scheme.  Neither did the opposition but I digress.  By the bye we should see the team start to gel.

If the Panthers even so much as get past midfield on Sunday I will be surprised.

I'm in agreement that our defense will be the weaker unit this year. The one fortunate thing is that the quarterbacks we play, other than Luck and Brady, are not the NFL's cream of the crop. Our running game has a chance to be very good this year enabling the defense to be more rested.

Quote:That's what people were saying last year about 2015. We're the fusion generator of the NFL, alway just a year away from a breakthrough.

Admittedly,  I was one of the people who thought the Jaguars would be near .500 last season.   Especially,  after the major improvement in the 2nd half of the 2013 season and promise of Blake Bortles that he displayed in the 2014 pre-season.    The Jags Offensive Line problems and disappointing season by Toby Gerhart,  who I watched many times with the Vikings,  contributed greatly to the 3-13 season.

At this point in time,  it looks like the Jaguars have upgraded the Center and RT positions in a substantial manor.   The left side of the O-Line is probably the Offense's biggest question mark but the overall pieces the Jags have in place on that side of the ball look noticeably better than has been the case in many years.

Like I mentioned earlier today,  if not for the injuries to arguably the Jags two most talented Defensive players,  the Jags season would be looking vastly different.

With another draft, FA class,  and if the team has its key pieces relatively healthy in 2016,   the playoffs should be the expectation.

I see people saying that we lost Fowler.... He wasn't part of the equation last year, so we actually lost nothing. Next year, he'll be icing on the cake.

If the Panthers don't get past midfield on Sunday you can pencil us in for the Super Bowl.

Quote:I think it goes without saying but I'll say it anyway. The Jags' pass rush might be anemic this year. The Fowler injury was a big blow obviously. Add to that the fact that the remainder of the pass rushers on this team are average at best. Throw in the Andre Branch injury and it's even worse. Sen'Derrick Marks was taken off PUP but I'm not expecting big things from him this year. Geno Atkins was ineffective last year after coming back from a similar injury and I expect the ACL to have a similar effect on Marks this year.

Sorry, I hate to be a Debbie Downer but the lack of pass rush is going to really hurt this team this year. I think the defense will struggle as a whole because of it. I just hope the rush defense is strong so that down & distance will allow to get our best pass rushers on the field in predictable 3rd and long situations.

On the plus side, I think the offense will grow by leaps and bounds this year. The O line is much improved. The receivers are good and the arrow is definitely pointing up with that unit. The TEs are good if not great when Julius returns from his injury. The RB group is deep and talented.

For the first time in a long time, I expect the offense to be better than the defense. Let's hope they can manufacture a pass rush and make this team a winner.
I agree thanks to OL & Ast HC Marrone the offensive line has improved a lot which improves the run game & of course the passing game.  The 2 & 3 TE schemes of Greg Olson should be fun to watch especially when Thomas returns (might only be 2 until then with Lewis & Clay).

The DBs are a real concern I mean with a 46 defense they should stop the run and force the short passes & hopefully Sergio Brown will play like he did against the Giants & prevent the deep ball unlike the Lions game (Colvin shouldve bumped but Brown didnt go deep on that Golden Tate TD).

The defense is sure banged up early on though huh?

I dont I had a guess that they may have even thought of cutting Clemons but with all the injuries, I dunno Clemons is an interesting story.

The biggest concern against the run I have is the OTTO Skuta seems to be having a tough time switching into his role, & is Cyprien starting or is he injured?

I think they'll do fine against the run and allow less than 100 yards, but I am more worried about the Pass....   DBs will be tested.

Cyprien will play with a "protective device" for the injured finger.

As great as the offense has looked, this defense has the potential to be really awful all around. I'm not predicting it but I certainly wouldn't be surprised if it ends up bottom 5 in yards allowed.

Okay, I hope that doesnt hurt his ability to play.

Cover 3 Defense for Jags against the Panthers

House LCB - Left Deep third of cover 3

7/5 Tech LDE Odrick must show he can pressure as LDE

3 Tech DT Tyson- Must get pressure or will effect Odricks ability of play

1 Tech DT Miller - Key player in this scheme has to be strong

Leo - Branch or Clemons rushing in with clear line

MIKE Poz & SS Cyprien - Middle of zone

OTTO Skuta short left zone

Nickel DB  Colvin (in this one case other wise RCB) - Right short zone

RCB McCray right deep third of Zone

FS Sergio Brown Middle Deep third of Zone

Ted Ginn Jr and Philly Brown are the starting WRs... I doubt our "DBs will be tested" much

Couldn't agree more.

Even if we had Fowler, I'd still have my doubts.

Clemons is poised to fall of a cliff in production (and probably his career), and Fowler would have had to have been mostly a one man show.  There's little or no competition in the form of depth.

Instead of guys fighting for a starting role, we have a demotion of Clemons, and the default starter is injured (Branch.)

Far from an ideal situation.

Our pass rush will be very average this season.

Hard to believe we've only had 2 players to ever record double digit sacks in a single season.

Long drives that eat up a lot of time, instead of 3 and outs like last year, will improve the defense in a number of ways. Winning the time of possession battle would go a long way in easing the pressure on the defense.

They had 3 players in 1999 get double digit sacks
