As you get older, does your inner self change?
|
I personally am on the plus side of 50. Kids tend to piss me off when they get on my lawn, and they listen to noise that they call "music". I could go on but I don't want to get political.
In my 20's I thought I knew so much only to later find out that what I knew and thought just wasn't so. I got married and had some children which started changing me. I suddenly had to be responsible and had to provide for my family. I was into "pop culture" quite a bit and it was important to me and my young bride to be up on the "latest" regarding style and media. In my 30's it was "all about fun" which meant buying toys, traveling, etc. We had our home and could afford newer vehicles as well as the latest "gadgets" which included a gaming system (first generation Nintendo if I remember right) as well as a home computer. Home PC's and the internet were in their infancy at the time. In my mid-to-late 30's and into my 40's I started to think forward about retirement and the future. I aggressively started paying off what debts that I had and started really aggressively saving and investing money. I sit here now in my 50's still saving money and contemplating retirement. Television shows don't really interest me much, and I spend a lot more time reading, learning and teaching my grandson things. "Pop culture" isn't really my thing, and I've kind of "slowed down" in a way. It's gotten to the point to where I pay somebody to do tasks that I normally would have done myself such as painting my house or mowing the lawn. The one big piece of advice that I would give younger folks is to try to stay out of debt as much as possible and save/invest money. It's a good feeling to go to a car dealership to purchase a new vehicle and simply write a check for it. It's a great feeling not having a mortgage payment or any credit card bills. It's also a great feeling knowing that I can do whatever I want and can live a good life without being dependent on a paycheck. There are 10 kinds of people in this world. I'm 33 this year, I work for the same service that I did when I was 18. Albeit in a different role.
My job is high pressured and can be quite stressful. When I was in my early 20's I used to take it in my stride and 'get on with it'. Nowadays I do so much overtime to pay for the holiday's I take my family on. I use this place as a release and a hiding spot from 'reality' (as I do my Xbox or my TV/Sports Package). Sometimes I just have to switch off. I used to be extremely keen for my work and used to love talking about it. Nowadays, however, I just leave it at the door when I walk out. I don't answer my phone, texts or emails if I see it's anyone from work (unless it's a social thing). I'd say my inner self has changed, but I certainly don't think for the worst. ![]() 80% of what I talk about is nonesense.. the other 25% is made up statistics... Quote:For instance, I'm 29, I still feel exactly the same inside as I did in high school. Sure I'm a little wiser, more mature, I know how to manage my money, and I try to eat healthy. But inside I still feel like the same kid. Here's the deal. The answer is yes, you do change mentally as you get older but your awareness of that change is so gradual and muted that you can talk yourself into believing you feel exactly the same. Mostly this manifests itself as younger people appearing to always be rushing around in an awful dag-nabbed hurry and afternoon naps holding a lot more appeal than they did just a few years ago. Also, while you'll generally continue to be open to new experiences (new music, new movies, Jaguars winning seasons, etc.) you'll generally feel that having the volume of life on 6 or 7 is just fine (as opposed to having to turn it up to 10 all the time). Happy aging!
I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

Happy aging! I have a grandmother still alive at the age of 104. I still get amazed when I talk to her about what she's seen in her lifetime. From being alive during major world wars, the development of television and radio, telephones. The advancements made in automobiles, seeing a man land on the moon, the invention of color television. We then went to cable television then satellite television, computers, the internet and now "smart phones". What she has seen and experienced during her lifetime blows me away, especially since I've only been alive for a very short period of that time frame. I see so many people say something to the effect that "old people annoy them", but understand one thing. Those "old people" were part of the generation that makes today's world possible. Those "old people" built the world that we live in today. I would bet that a CS graduate today couldn't program an old computer from back in the day when that technology was "cutting edge". It's quite possible that those "old people" lived and possibly even were a part of WWII or other wars. Some people need to get it through their thick skulls that people before us sacrificed and made a huge commitment for us. It's because of the "old people" that we live as we do today and have the technology that we enjoy. There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those who don't. I find the older I get the more interesting I find people older than myself (and to realize how much I can learn from them). This is something I totally missed when I was in my twenties. Nowadays I'll go out of my way to speak to people who experienced things before I was born. I'm old enough that I've actually started seeing people younger than myself become interested in my own experiences in the same way. A few anyway.

I believe the older you get, you realize you've always been the person you were, when you wondered who you would become as you got older.
You were that person all along, only with different experiences and perspective.
"You do your own thing in your own time. You should be proud."
To a degree as already pointed out. Traumatic events can change how you deal with things, but even then you're still you at the core. Mainly the level of responsibility you feel when you get married, start families and careers, and everything else involved in life is what changes. I'll be 45 next month and sometimes I forget I'm 20 years older than my inner mind thinks I am, however my body reminds me that I passed 25 long ago. Lol.

I just turned 49 a few weeks ago...I find now I get more aggravated with the youth of today for there totally opposite views of how society should work as us older people...I get so aggravated with the perspective the young people have on life...For instance, there was a video floating around on facebook where some reporter was at a beach in CA I think asking young college kids if they think incest is alright as long as both parties are over 18 and no babies could be made...Every single one said YES! Let people do what they want, no one should be able to tell you who you can have sex with...
As I look back and see how much morals have changed since I was a kid I get flat out disgusted...No respect for anyone, everyone is a victim, everyone should be able to do what they want as long as they enjoy themselves, everything should be free, killing someone because they wore the wrong color jack on the wrong side of town and I am frankly slowly withdrawing from society...I never go to bars any more, I go out in town when I have to, go out and eat, shop, and such but I want to be at home more with my kids and grand kids...Our house here is similar to a duplex or a townhouse depending on where you live, so we bought the other side in Aug, moved our daughter and grand daughter in and now we have a grandson coming any time now...

My views have changed, my interest have changed even my taste have changed. But I'm still the same person so I don't think my inner self has changed.
In the end we are who we are I don't think that changes. I think how we express it changes as we age.
Quote:Said every middle-aged person. "These damn kids with their long hair and hippy music and protesting. Cant find a job because all they do is smoke marijuana and go to parties! The country was so much better when I was a kid." Interesting question. I think some people do, and some people don't. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing. I know people who don't appear to have changed much at all, and they're having a great time just living their lives. But I think if you are an introspective and analytical person, you change a lot over time. You value time more and more, and you are more aware of how you are wasting it. You think a lot about what you want in life and how to get it. You think a lot about what life is all about.
Looking back, I sure hope I've changed. I did so many stupid, dangerous, and pointless things when I was younger. Quote:I personally am on the plus side of 50. Plus, I have mellowed quite a bit. Things that used to tick me off barely get a rise out of me.

Quote:This. Me too, I also don't have much interest in the late night social stuff any more. Keeps that drama level down. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato
As you get older, you frequently lose your train of thought. But the upside of Bortles is that he's a very good scrambler. I'm thinking about having a sandwich for lunch, because the beer is very tasty. Did anybody read the paper this morning. It was a TV show back in the late 80's I think.
Have you seen my baseball?
I've been wanting to post in this thread for a while now but haven't gotten the time. I'm glad it's still active.
I'm 42 and I honest-to-God thought that I would "slow down" by this point but no luck so far. I just did a complete career change due to a re-org at my old position so I'm learning not only the new language at the job but an entirely different way of thinking. The reason I think that's important is that I get told on an almost weekly basis about my "sense of urgency". Which to me, is a nice way of saying "you're hyper". While my waistband has expanded and I need to be a bit more careful about what I do I still go a thousand miles an hour through my day and hit the gym at least five times a week. I still play with legos, I still watch animated shows, I stay up late, I get up early, I have never seen a person that I won't talk to and I love going out. I'm waiting, honestly and sincerely waiting for this motor of mine to die down just a bit. But, live fast, die old, leave one hell of a handsome corpse. Right? So while my perspective on a lot of things have changed (read as: the "coldness of youth" has died down quite a bit with me) I'm still me. The same, rambunctious, wild, always counted on to say the wrong thing, me.
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.
Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say! |
