Bortles 2015
|
Quote:I think we have added a lot of beef and savvy on the o-line. Wiz is the de facto best center in the division. He'll help Bortles out immensely. Having two guards who can help inside or out will be a big bonus to this offense too. Joeckel may never pan out to be worth the 2nd overall pick and highest grade of his draft class, but if Bortles can manage to play to the strengths of this offensive line the NFL may see something it never has before. In the history of the NFL no QB has had such a polarizing rookie campaign follow by setting franchise records. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Stefan Wisniewski is a self proclaimed student of the game who embraces its intricacies. That's why he prefers playing center though he can play guard. He specified this in his interviews. He has years and experience that Bowanko doesn't.

And I wouldn't really quantify Bortles rookie campaign as "polarizing". Just another promising QB entering the league.
And what franchise records?

I meant to say Bortles' had a horrific statistical year filled with bonehead mistakes. I was trying to be kind. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

Nice article about Bortles being a prime candidate to make a big jump this upcoming year. Stats wise, I could see him putting up 22-25 tds and less than 12 picks.
Crab Cakes and Football! That's what Jacksonville does!
Quote:I meant to say Bortles' had a horrific statistical year filled with bonehead mistakes. I was trying to be kind.It wasn't pretty, but you can see he's got something special. It was apparent very quickly with Gabbert he did not. Time will tell, but i think we have our franchise guy finally. Quote:It wasn't pretty, but you can see he's got something special. It was apparent very quickly with Gabbert he did not. He's better than Gabbert yes. Special moments yes. Does that add up to being a special and/or franchise player, not at all. He lacks efficiency and consistency, which is why I described his rookie campaign as polarizing. Some good with a lot of bad. Quote:He's better than Gabbert yes. Special moments yes. Some good with a lot of bad.Lacking efficiency and consistency is a common trait for rookies, especially for ones who were thought to need more development before starting. Bortles isn't really a polarizing player. He doesn't divide fans into love him or hate him groups like a Tebow does. Most people are on the same page as far as acknowledging he has shown flashes of being real good but makes far too many mistakes. I don't think anyone would deny the fact that he will need to drastically minimize those mistakes if is ever to become a top notch QB. We show less advertisements to registered users. Yeah I think Bortles isn't anywhere near considered polarizing. He had a short stint at a school not considered a big football school, then went to jax, nothing really off field as of interest or concern, a very normal seeming guy with a rough rookie season that wasn't much on the national spotlight. He's liked, but not loved yet and I don't know of any group of the fan base that are really against him. He flashed, struggled, and quietly left the season, much off the national radar. Promising or concerning or both, yes, but polarizing?
He's figuratively describing Bortles' play as polarizing, up n down, good n bad...not the reception from fans.

I'm not getting into another argument over use of a word! No. Freaking. Way.

A running game and a good/great TE are a QB's best friends... last year the Jags had neither... I look for Bortles to make strides this year in the passing game... he looked much like I expected him to look last year... paying behind that OL would make a bunch of QB's look bad... he did show enough flashes to have hope in his development going into this year... especially by him working with a QB coach during the off season... that shows he's willing to learn and improve to get better... but only time will tell...

"Dead Arm" after his rookie season??
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/201...last-year/ Not good.

I've long heard about his arm getting tired near the end of the season, but Caldwell's description of how his arm was practically dead is news to me. I thought they cut him back to a conservative passing game due to his INTs early on because his stats wend down dramatically when the INTs stopped, but now it sounds like this may have been more a result of his arm tiring out. Only, the INTs stopped, etc, about mid-season...not the end of the season. I'm now wondering if his arm was tired for nearly the entire second half of the season, and then flat out dead by December. They'll need to seriously monitor his reps if this is the case.

There seemed to be change in Blake's game following the London game during their bye week. This stats prior to and after the bye week are vastly different as he was on pace for a decent season but finished dead last among starting QBs in most stats. Here's the difference
(he didn't start week three, but he threw enough passes with 24 to count it as a full game) ... First 8 games (Bortles went 1-6 as a starter) ...

176 of 278 (63.3%, 35 attempts per game) for 1921 yards (6.9 YPA, 240.1 yards per game), 8 TDs and 14 INTs for a 72.2 qb rating
Last 6 games (Bortles went 2-4 as a starter )...
104 of 197 (52.8%, 33 attempts per game) for 987 yards (5.0 YPA, 164.5 yards per game), 3 TDs and 3 INTs for a 65.7 qb rating

Let's say they take Bortles attempts down to about 25 per game where he's learned from last year and has stats similar to his first half games with the INTs similar to his last half. Then you'd have a qb with these stats for a full season...
253 of 400 for 2760 yards, 16 TDs and 8 INTs for a 120.0 qb rating This sounds like a reasonable expectation to me. His passing yardage drops here from 240 per game like his early games last year to 172.5 more like his late season games, but they 'll need to make up for this with the running game to save Blake's arm for the full season.

This stats prior to and after the bye week are vastly different as he was on pace for a decent season but finished dead last among starting QBs in most stats. Here's the difference A couple of things happened at the bye week. The most important is that Allen Robinson went on injured reserve. He was the #1 receiver on the team when he went down, and his tough catches were a significant part of the reason that the team was sustaining drives so well in the earlier part of the season compared to the latter. Once Robinson went down Bortles didn't have a guy he could count on to make the catch at the first down marker. The other thing that happened was that Fisch tried to emphasize cutting down on INTs, who knows how much that affected Bortles in causing him to doubt his own decisions during games. |
