Tom Coughlin

Quote:It sure would be interesting if this "non interest" is just a smoke screen. For all we know, it's a done deal, and the Jags are fulfilling the Rooney rule.

Then again, it could be just wishful thinking.
Nope, we're simply not hiring Coughlin. His ship with the Jags sailed long ago.

As it should.  Unless last resort.  He will be 71 years old.

I suppose it could be a smokescreen, but it's more likely the two sides weren't on the same page. That could change if the list of candidates starts to dry up, but I think for now Tom is off their radar.
Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Agreed, he also said he wasnt offered any HC job yet and still thinks he can lead a team to the superbowl.

Not sure why but I had to quote this.

I have a feeling Tom Coughlin wanted to be GM and Head coach, but Khan wasn't willing to part with Caldwell especially with the uncertainty of how long Coughlin would've been here.

All in all, I think it's a mistake to not hire Coughlin. Not to say these other coaches couldn't come in here and be successful right away, but personally I want to win now. I am tired of losing. Of all of these candidates, Coughlin is the only trully proven commodity. Mike Smith has had success as well, especially right away, so he would be my next choice.

I have a feeling he wanted to be coach and all he was proposed was President of Football Operations.

If that's true, what a monumental mistake if the next coach doesn't win right away.

I wouldn't be surprised if all they wanted was to hear his opinion, and had no employment offer in mind whatsoever.

I think there's a very good chance that was the way it went down.

It was Bill Belichek

Me either and it would make sense. I imagine his opinion is respected throughout the majority of the league.

So they used him. Even worse.

This is what I've heard as well.

Wasn't Gene Smith Tom Coughlin's guy?

My thoughts exactly or he met with the team to discuss what role he was looking for right away and in the future rather than an actual official interview

Considering he was hired as a college scout - he was more likely brought on by Huyghue or Reiprish (director of college scouting at the time).

Coughlin was long gone by the time he was named GM.

I believe Coughlin told Weaver on the way out as Wayne was cleaning house that he should retain Gene Smith.

That's all well and good.

But Gene was  just director of college scouting at the time.

Smith was not promoted to any executive level until 6 years after Coughlin had gone.

Gene was a BLESTO scout, or whatever it was called. Coughlin convinced Weaver to keep gene around when he was let go. He saw what he thought was potential in Gene Smith.
