I can't imagine a harder game. And I'm an athlete. An old one now, but an athlete. I'm glad my brother got me started on it 35+ years ago. I'm not very good, but golf and bowling (which I'm really good at) satisfy my competitive urges while giving me a far smaller chance of injury.


Plus I just like getting on the course and shooting the breeze with my friends, drinking a few beverages, and playing.


I sucked so bad when I first started playing that I sold my clubs. My brother got them for me as a graduation present. I was used to being good at everything in high school and I quickly discovered that golf is a hard, hard, game.


Then I got my first full time job a couple of years later and EVERYBODY played after work. So I had to go buy clubs. DOH!! It takes a while to get adequate...which is about where I am.


It's fine that some people don't 'get it'. But it's a fun game.

 

The reason I don't play more is that I live a block away from a trap and skeet club, and that comes 1000x more naturally to me than swinging clubs.

 

Plus, I guess I'm so self-conscious about how terrible I am at golf, I get embarrassed to even go try to get better. Kinda lame I guess.

The trick is to play with people who are worse than you or to go out with someone who doesn't take it seriously. 

 

I've got two friends who both take their golf very seriously.  It's almost comical how obsessed both of them are.  One had a custom set of clubs made, and took all sorts of lessons just so he could at least look the part when he's out there.  He's gotten better over the years, and he's a blast to play a round of golf with.  As much as he works on his game, when he gets out there with us, he's just having a good time on the course with buddies.  There are all sorts of side bets, and a ton of banter.  He makes it entertaining. 

 

The other guy has the top name brand equipment in the latest versions.  He takes lessons.  He even forces his daughters to play, and they hate it.  He spends hundreds on their equipment, then gets ticked off when they don't want to go out and knock it around with dear old dad.  This guy takes his golf very seriously, but you'd never know it if you're playing a round with him.  Any time I talk to him, he's been on another business trip where he's playing very high profile courses as he's wooing clients.  When I go out with him and play a round, it's one excuse after another as he hooks one shot, slices another.  Suddenly his elbow is bothering him, or his back, or maybe he had too many beers.  We've played in a few charity events together, and the other guys in our 4some hate playing with him because he gets so pissed off when he makes bad shots, which is quite often.  I get a kick out of it because the guy is wired so tightly when it comes to his golf game, all it takes is a little ribbing to see him wilt, then it's game on.  Let the comedy begin!

 

I go out with the same clubs I've had for about 5 years, and in each case, I can keep up with the first friend, and I usually beat the other guy, and I'm a very occasional golfer.  I spend no time on the range working on my swing, or perfecting my game.  I love going out cold and teeing it up.  The more I warm up, the worse I play.  It drives both of these guys nuts because I've always been able to do fairly well.  At least as good or better than them. 

 

On a side note, I've never done skeet shooting, but buddy #1 above has been talking about doing it for a little while now.  His other obsession which I do share is shooting, but it's normally stationary paper targets at a range.  He's been looking at places to do skeet shooting, and actually knows someone who does it on their property out in Bryceville.  We're looking at doing that in a couple of weeks.

I've seen you post about hand gunning before, I bet if you enjoy that, that you'll love clay shooting. I'd suggest if you're not very familiar with shot gunning, to start the day or maybe even the whole first time out focus on trap games, and when you get confident with it, then move to skeet.


I'm sure you probably already know the difference but for anyone else wondering: Trap is most akin to shooting stationary targets, you shoot at a clay pigeon moving up and away from you. You basically "cover the bird" and pull the trigger.


Skeet is shooting at a clay pigeon moving in a side to side motion at varying angles throughout the game. It's harder because you have to swing through and lead the target. A lot of beginners have trouble with this, shoot 3 for 25 for five straight games and give up.


If you can learn on someone's home setup that's the best, because unless he has very expensive throwers, the birds will move slower than a club's and it just makes it that much easier to pick up and learn. If you get to do it, let me know what you think!

When I was a boy we used to shoot skeet in our backyard in Kansas. Being about the size of a yard gnome then, I stuck to the 20 gauge because the 12 beat the hell out of me. My uncle was really good. He could cover 3 skeet with a pump coming off a home thrower.


I haven't shot skeet in many years. It's a good way to spend the day and to teach youngsters proper firearm safety and use. I never exposed my kids to it and that's regrettable.

I shot a 12 O/U once and it bloodied my nose.  We went to visit this same uncle and he was showing us his new gun.  He loaded up the thrower and asked me if I wanted to give it a shot.  "Sure" I said.  I wasn't used to the heft of the gun and length of the butt stock.  I swung it up, got the pigeon sighted in and killed it.  Unfortunately the gun wasn't firmly against my shoulder and the top of the receiver kicked into my nose.  It was just like getting sucker punched.  Man that hurt.  I think he had high brass shells in it too, which didn't help matters. I never shot that thing again.   :no:

Correct me if I'm wrong but I've always assumed golf was a pretty expensive sport to keep up with?


I don't have to many hobbies at this point in life but that's normal with 4 kids under 7. I guess you could call diaper changing a sport and damn I'm good at it at this point.
