***The official Free Agency Twitter and rumors thread***

We keep hearing from Dave Caldwell that the Jags may pick up more players should they be released from their teams. One area that the Jags were said to be on the lookout for was Offensive Lineman. Well, the 49ers just released Jonathan Martin, formerly of the Dolphins (Abuse-gate).

Will Caldwell bring him in for a sit down? He could lend depth. He is only 25 and will turn 26 in August. He is only in his 3rd year in the league so he could be picked up on waivers.

What do you think?

Waste of time. He's soft and useless.

He's soft and can't block. Not a good combination:

Quote:49ers waive Jonathan Martin after one season

Jonathan Martin | FA

(March 26, 2015 4:38 PM EDT)

49ers waived OT Jonathan Martin.

The "Bullygate" victim lasted only one season in San Francisco. Reunited with his college coach Jim Harbaugh, Martin played 661 snaps across 15 appearances (nine starts), but was among the least-effective tackles in the league. With his mentor in Harbaugh now gone, the 49ers apparently didn't see the point in keeping Martin around. Martin is still only 26 (in August), but has never been an effective NFLer.

Guy Whimper could probably give him a run for his money.

Even worse,  unlike with Guy Whimper,  Jonathan Martin's presence could easily cause an unnecessary distraction.

That play demonstrated that Guy Whimper has been playing out of position.  LOL

Quote:im thinking it would be lower than the 6 mil a season but he will get a nice guaranteed amount.

The concern I would have in this type of situation is the realistic possibility exists that Greg Jennings would only warrant a roster spot for his play this coming season.   If Jennings doesn't warrant a roster spot for his play in 2016,   then a significant portion of the guaranteed money would in essence be dead money.   The Jaguars certainly can absorb that with their excellent salary cap situation.   Yet,  every cap dollar is a potential opportunity,  present and future.   Figuring out a contract that would make sense for both parties in a situation such as this one is much easier said than done.   Especially,  if there is true competition for Jennings'  services.

Quote:From the sound of interviews with Gus and Dave, that seems precisely what they're looking for.

It certainly makes a great deal of sense.   The big question remains,  can the two parties come to a contract agreement that both would be comfortable with?   All it takes is one other team to make the answer no.

Guy's best attribute as a NFL player was his route running ability... Let that also sink in...

The Ball Island era
Alan Ball will always stand out in my memory as one of the early and obvious indications this team upgraded its GM.

When needing a patch at corner, Gene Smith signed Aaron Ross.

Caldwell signed Ball - who played light years better in two seasons for less than Ross' salary for one year.

Quote:Jaguars not interested in Crabtree

Michael Crabtree | FA

(March 30, 2015 9:49 PM EDT)

The Florida Times Union reports the Jaguars "have never been interested" in free agent Michael Crabtree.

"The same goes for Reggie Wayne," writes beat reporter Ryan O'Halloran. The Jags are in the market for a veteran wideout, but prefer Greg Jennings to Crabtree and Wayne. The outlook for Crabtree's free agent market remains soft and ultimately bleak. He's probably going to have a tough time finding a starting job.
