Right to Work gaining momentum

#41

Quote:So here is my question on this.  If unions are so great, why have an issue with Right to work laws?  All those laws state is that unions can't force employees to join or pay dues.

If the union is providing such a good service, wouldn't employees want to sign up voluntarily?

If you have to force someone to pay you, I'd be willing to be that your service isn't all that great.

Right to work is nothing more than freedom of choice.   The fact that the unions oppose that says a lot in my opinion

Exactly.  The next best reform after Right to Work would be to make it a crime to attempt to harass, threaten or otherwise attempt to force someone to join a union.

That should be coming because as you state, it is a criminal act. It is extortion.

What lies behind us, and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.

The OP has chimed in (appreciate that JIB), is there anyone else who thinks police and firefighter unions should go away?

I typically "chime in" to many discussions during a certain time frame.

What's your point regarding police and firefighter unions?

When I mentioned you "chimed in" it was in reference to the post where I quoted you and directly asked you a question. The last time I did that you responded but someone else did as well. Since that didn't happen this time, I tried to open it up to the floor.

The point is to see if others also have a negative opinion of those unions.

I have a negative opinion of all public sector unions, they represent labor and management (politicians) in collusion against Ownership (taxpayers).

They have no place and should be immediately disbanded. Public works can't unionize against tax payers. You want a cushy penchant and retirement go get a job in the private sector but instead getting a government job is like winning the lottery.

It's not against tax payers. I bet most tax payers would prefer they were well treated and provided a better standard of service rather than a low pay Hugh turnover profession.

Politicians: Here, we'll give you all this money through these contracts if you vote for us.

Unions: Here, we'll take all this money through these dues and give it to you to support your campaigns .

Taxpayers: Hey, that's OUR money!

I'm sure people would rather high pay to police and firefighters than politicians. Until the politicians start working for the people rather than corporate donors

You hate firefighters too? Don't think they deserve a decent pay?

Thanks for responding Eric, FSG, and lastonealive. That's 1 conservative (correct me if I'm wrong JIB), 2 libertarians and an Australian. Can we hear more across the political spectrum?

Put me down as opposing any and all unions.

The trade/industry and the unions that represent them are separate and should be considered that way.

I have nothing but love for our police and firefighters.

Their unions, quite the opposite.

Let's not pretend you have to support one but not the other.  Or falsely assume that support/non-support of one means the same for the other.  That would be to not fully understand the entire situation.

I never hear police and firefighter unions come up in the general discussion of unions. I don't think being opposed to those unions means you're opposed to those professions. I hear about teacher unions and I guess trade/industry (as you put it) unions in these discussions.

Perk, I'm not sure which way you lean politically, but thanks for the reply.

Pirk, thanks for the reply.
