The Truth about the Vietnam War

#41

Quote:if war ended slavery explain the union slave states.......

What's to explain? When the war ended with the northern victory the Constitution was amended to outlaw slavery. Without that victory on the battlefield there would've been no change, had Lee taken Washington D.C. then an armistice would've been declared, the Union dissolved and slavery would've continued. Slavery ended in the USA because the North burned down the South, end of story.

So your argument is Northern Slave states fought to end slavery.

I'll take the discussion to the new thread, but the reality is War was not necessary to end slavery, it ended every where else in the world without "war" that you trumpet like a badge of honor. The lust of war is the end of all empires.

Nope, my argument is the Civil War ended slavery. Intent plays no part in my statement.

Anyone been to war museum in Ho Chi Minh city? Pretty sobering. What Agent Orange did to the local population was horrible.

Quote:I cannot believe how you can ignore the entire history of the period leading up to the war.

What was the most popular novel of the 1850s?  Uncle Tom's Cabin

What was the most important and controversial Supreme Court decision of the 1850s?   Dredd Scott

Why did a Southern senator beat a Northern senator on the floor of the senate with a cane?

Why did congressmen start taking guns onto the floor of the congress?

What was the Kansas-Nebraska act?   Why did they call it "bleeding Kansas?"

What was the grand compromise authored by Henry Clay?

What were the Lincoln-Douglas debates?

Who was John Brown?  Frederick Douglass?

Why did the election of Lincoln cause the South to secede?

This is all just off the top of my head.  The history of the decade leading up to the Civil War was all about the controversy over slavery.   The southern states stated in their articles of secession, which I have provided to you, that they were seceding over the issue of slavery and the threat to their way of life and their property, African slaves.  The majority of wealth in the south was the value of the African slaves.

You ignore all this and say the civil war was fought over the issue of whether the states could leave the union. That's like a person filing for divorce just to prove they can do it.  Well, why did they want to leave the union in the first place?

You have gone back and re-written history to fit your personal political beliefs.   That's what you've done.

Keep it up. You are obviously more educate on the subject than Eric, and I enjoy your takes. Don't get too worked up with Eric, though. His personal political agenda has convinced him he is an expert in every field imaginable (economy, foreign policy, history, health care etc.). I don't think I've ever seen him concede to being wrong.

He is resorting to flimsy strawman tactics. Nowhere did you state that "...your argument is Northern Slave states fought to end slavery." In fact, your point is simply quite clear.
