Yes, Montana was great. But, I do believe Brady has been clutch at the end of Superbowls more than Montana did.

I have no Recency Bias. I remember fully the days of Montana/Walsh. They were great, no doubt. I remember Walsh being with Cincinnati, and then moving on to beat them twice in Superbowls. Montana really only had to be super clutch in the '88 Superbowl with his late drive (He was also super clutch in the '81 NFCC Game vs Dallas with "The Catch").


Brady has been clutch in all 6 Superbowls he has played in (driving for game winning/go ahead scores very late in the 4th qtr of each one of them). After he took the lead in both games vs NYG, the Giants had just enough time left to score/win, and the Pats defense obliged them both times. The Pats defense almost gave away a 3rd Superbowl last night after Brady had led his team for go-ahead TDs.


As great as Montana was,, I think Brady is more clutch in the Superbowls.

Really?  That's funny.  I became a die-hard fan of the Patriots in 1971.  Followed them religiously through a lot of lean years.  I should be basking in Patriot glory now, but I got off that train in 1995 and don't claim any association with or admiration for the B&B regime in Foxboro.  Cheating is an excellent way to get me to dislike somebody, and those 2 are unrepentant cheaters.  No, it's not their success I dislike.

Good deal.  I just think some times people get caught up in the present way to much.  Thanks for confirmation that you have a weighted opinion with consideration to the achievements of Montana.  "The Catch" is flat awesome and is right up there with "The Drive".

 The success that the NE franchise has had is undeniable and Brady's talent and accomplishments at the position will be ranked high in the record books for decades to come. 

 

I get the gripes on Spygate, but this deflation deal seems like an inconsequential blip on the radar to me.  I think they deserve the credit on this SB win. 

 

For those in the game day thread that keep harping "check down."  I don't know where to start.  You need to do some homework and learn the difference between a designed short pass and a check down I guess. 

They were clearly using outside receivers to "clear the zone" and open room for the one on one mismatches underneath.  Come on, people. 

Check down?  LOL.  You take what they give you - and that area of the field is the clear weakness in Seattle's D.  

Dallas did the same thing to them - only not as frequently.

I was just having this conversation with my father last night. Bradshaw will never been put on the b pedestal like Brady, Montana, etc because when people think of those 70s Steelers teams they bypass Bradshaw as the reason and chalk it up to the steel curtain. Wrong or right I think that's what happens.

The team had like 10 HOF in an era where you don't lose people to FA. Brady/Belichick just won a SB after most of the people with them in the first one are analysts watching the game now. The Steelers were great, but the consistency shown by NE in the FA era is historic, to actually have MORE wins and appearances than the other dynasties that didn't lose their players is absolutely incredible. All of the other dynasties were basically a nucleus for 5-8 years. All 4 of Bradshaw's appearances were in 5 years, Montana had 4 in 8 years, Starr/Packers 5 in 7 years, Cowboys Aikman 3 in 4. Brady has been in 6 SBs that were basically with 3 different teams. The defensive juggernaut that won 3/4 (which is basically the kind of dynasty most guys have, one great time performing over a relavitvely short time - the offensive juggernaut that met with another great coach and a mismatch as well as 2 of the craziest pass plays going against them - and now a more balanced team. Really Elway is the only other guy that got there with such different teams but he only won with one set. Brady has won with multiple teams and been a play away from winning with a third. There is no longer a debate, they are the best. Now, if you want to say that the Steelers TEAM when they won those SBs were more dominant than the Pats dynasty that won 3/4, I'd agree. Same for the Packers and probably the Browns when they had Graham, but to say that specifically Brady/Belichick are not the best is just incorrect.


*I guess MAYBE you could say Graham/Browns were better in the 40s/50s but thats so long ago its practically a different game. They barely even had a playoff system back then, but its hard to argue with making the game every year for a decade, in terms of dominance. Maybe 1A/1B for the old era and the modern era.
