Jameis Winston declaring

#41

FSU secretly breathing a sigh of relief, he's soon going to be somebody else's problem.

I hope for Winston's sake he can get his head out of his butt and mature as he heads to the NFL.

Unless the tacks take him. In that case I hope he remains the meandering idiotic thug he is (he'll fit in just fine in Nashville!).

Winston can ancitipate routes, throw reciever open, and throw inside and outside the numbers... he's an elite prospect.. for my money the number 1 player in the entire draft... i doubt the bucs let him slip past 1

Um, they're actually pretty similar players. Can Winston anticipate throwing receivers open better? Yes. But that's not the only thing that goes into being an NFL QB. For one thing winston has a really elongated release which is going to hurt him at the next level and cause picks because he's not getting the ball out of his hands quick enough when he makes a decision with where to go to the ball. Bortles footwork issues are correctable at least and he has no real throwing motion problem. Fixing throwing motions is considerably harder than fixing footwork. Winston is not as good a runner as Bortles. Winston has a Jamarcus Russell type body where if he does not watch himself he can easily get fat in the offseason. Bortles has a more naturally built big body, whereas Jameis is naturally skinny and put on fat to achieve his 230 weight in the past 2 years. And of course Bortles is far ahead of Winston mentally when it comes to maturity and intangibles as a leader. I don't think whatever team takes Winston will have to worry about some of the dumb stuff he did at FSU and unlike Manziel he does take the job serious already and isn't addicted to partying to my knowledge. But Bortles is still far more mature than Winston and already has the right mindset naturally. Winston will have to learn that and mature. We KNOW we will never have to worry about off field distractions with Bortles and he is 100% about football, that is not as clear with Winston. And that kind of thing matters when it comes to the QB position. Otherwise they have similar arm strength, athleticism as big mobile men, and instincts in the pocket as far as moving around, avoiding pressure, and standing in a taking a hit while delivering a throw downfield. Winston will probably be better at dissecting defenses than Bortles out of the gate, but he has his own set of problems that he will have to get through to be truly franchise QB status, just like Bortles. Ultimately their ceiling is about the same given equal talent around them.

So no, Winston is not that far ahead of Bortles as a prospect especially when taking into account the character concerns with Winston. As a pure talent I'd only rate him slightly ahead of Bortles coming out last year, and honestly I think had Bortles stayed in school and come out this year he'd have been picked ahead of both Mariota and Winston.

Thought this was interesting, never knew it.

"Ideally he’d be older with more experience. The top 20-rated quarterbacks in the NFL this year played an average of 3.7 seasons of college football and spent an average of 4.2 years on campus (including redshirt seasons). They averaged 36.4 college starts."

Seems like he's referencing the 26/27/60 Rule which was discussed in this old thread from last year.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

I think it's more referencing just time spent in college.  The better quarterbacks in the NFL right now spend more time in college to learn and get more play time.

It could have been a big reason Jameis wanted to stay as well.

One thing I've noticed watching college football lately.   College quarterbacks throw a lot of interceptions, but they're not intercepted because the college defenses are not very good.   That's what makes college QBs look so good compared to what they look like when they get in the pros.   These guys look great, because the defenses in college are really bad.   Teams draft them because they're desperate, and then they bust and fans don't understand why.

Seems you don't like the truth. You're saying he's not or just don't like that fact?

I'm saying someone with the username BortlesTheMan, should not keep saying how terrible he is. Bortles will be a lot better than Winston if he could get his feet corrected. Winston looks like a slow leftwich who can be taken down fairly easily and watching the playoff game, he has issues holding onto the ball.

Have there been quarterbacks labeled as slow that have ever gotten quicker?
What in the Wide Wide World of Sports is agoin' on here???

You obviously haven't watched much of Winston. Holding onto the ball has never been an issue for him. He is a much better NFL ready prospect than Mariotta. He has played in a pro style offense, can make every NFL throw, is a leader on the field, reads defenses well, is an excellent pocket passer with the innate ability to feel the rush and climb the pocket to create time for a receiver to get open, ability to throw the ball in tight windows, and has enough mobility to be a threat on the ground if pressed to run. He does have a baseball throwing motion as a negative, but nothing that can't be corrected. If not for off the field issues we would be saying best QB prospect since Andrew Luck. He will be special at the pro level and I hope he doesn't go to someone in our division.

That throwing motion is what got everyone up in arms about Tebow.  That throwing motion is what got Leftwich killed in the NFL.  It's not an easy thing to fix.

You know who else was said to have a throwing motion that can be fixed. I will give you a hint. He wore number 15 and was drafted by the broncos.
