Best breaking & entering deterrents

Quote:So.. someone tried to break into my home last night.

This was discovered as the lock on our back sliding glass door was jammed this morning. Some items which were left on the table on our back porch were taken and the lock on the gate to our backyard was busted.

Apparently they tried to lift the sliding glass door over the lock and it got stuck. The cops think it was teenagers as there have been other incidents in the neighborhood here and there where unlocked cars have been burglarized. It takes huge cojones or incredible stupidity to break into someone's house when the driveway indicates people are home.

I have dogs, but they were sleeping in my bedroom on the opposite side of the house and did not hear anything. Obviously nobody wants this to happen and I'm grateful to not have a cheap sliding door on my home. My concern is not stuff being taken. My concern is my family feeling violated or terrorized.

Replacing the lock on my backyard gate and looking into a motion detector with flood light and camera.

What other deterrents have you guys found to be effective which I can look into.
You could always take the approach of the former president and apologize to the burglars for you having things that they do not. You should bow down to them and explain to them that the day will come when everyone can have everyone else's things. Don't forget to remind the intruders that it is not their nor your fault that this situation exists. If the greedy CEOs of large corporations and banks weren't keeping "the man down" then none of this would be happening.

I think this is your best course of action. It has worked flawlessly for the past 8 years, so don't try to change things up now. It's not in your best interest.

What lies behind us, and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.

Quote:Shepherds are generally easier to train than some other breeds because of their natural instinct. As I said before, they are "working" dogs and are happy to do anything that you ask/teach them to do. What makes the breed amazing is that they can be one of the scariest and more "aggresivel" dogs (they are highly protective) while at the same time being one of the most gentle breeds.(good with children).

With a breed like them, they'll work and live fine in a small home or apartment, but the must be given regular daily exercise.

Yeah always amazed about how good they are around kids. Its one of the breeds of dogs I'm looking at.

My old dog Sam was a crazy springer spaniel , was a real character but had too much energy and he wasn't trained at all. I'd prefer a more low maintenance dog this time around.

People were all worried when we had our first daughter back we we had our first shepherd.  I think some of that is just because of the way they look.  They do look a bit menacing.  People were asking if we were going to get rid of the dog before we brought the baby home, and we had so many questions they even had us a little bit nervous.  Funny thing was, that dog was protective of that baby as soon as we brought it into the house.  She used to sleep in the doorway of the nursery and she'd come and get us as soon as our daughter would start to stir, before we even heard the baby monitor.  It was a very, VERY, sad day when we that dog passed away.

Don't go blaming the dog for your anti-social behavior.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

I always thought having dogs were not a effective deterrent because theives could leave a nice steak or good dog food, is that true?
Whether someone has a liberal, or conservative viewpoint, a authoritative figure should not lock a thread for the sole purpose to get the last word in all the while prohibiting someone else from being able to respond.

It depends on the dog actually.

However, consider the type of people that break into homes (usually thieves).  They aren't very smart to begin with, and they probably don't have a lot of money to buy a steak or whatever.  They'll just look for an easier target.

There are 10 kinds of people in this world.  Those who understand binary and those who don't.

Yeah its definitely that wolf look that gives people second thoughts about having them around kids.

Pretty crazy how much the loss of a dog can hit ya. Can't imagine losing a cat would feel the same as that.

Also, please note that there was a Dateline episode in which a homeowner purposely left his garage door open to entire neighborhood vandals to return (since he was previously vandalized).  When the vandal entered the garage, the homeowner killed him and got life in prison for 1st degree murder.   Most people would assume the Stand Your Ground Law would apply but it didn't since it was premeditated by the Owner.

That sucks, sounds like huntin' scumbags.

For dogs, bologna always works. No need to spend a lot of $.

Oh it does. I lost my Yorkie a couple years ago and my tuxedo cat last year. They were my babies.

Might be a stupid question but is a tuxedo cat just a black cat with with white patch at its neck?

Cats are cool and all just think dogs connect with you on a different level.

Basically yeah. Mine was white with black patches. The connection is like with most animals I guess. Depends on the cat. Mine acted like a dog. He would come when I called his name, he played fetch with his toys. He was very affectionate with anybody that would come over. I'd post a pic but don't know how to do it with my phone.

Dogs are loyal to owners.  Cats are loyal to themselves.

Maybe I'm not enough of a cat expert but they all seem the same. Dogs have a wild variety of personality's.
