Hurns to open season as the WR3

#41

Quote:By your logic Chad Henne is the best quarterback on the team.

I don't think that comparison is very appropriate. Hurns will still get playing time - he just won't be at the #1 spot on the depth chart. The same isn't true at QB, and it's a different scenario all together. Bortles is the guy for the future, but he's sitting to get more "pressure free" development time. Hurns is an UDFA climbing his way to the top and doing very well at it to even be considered for a starting position.

Lol @ Hurns being the #1 receiver. I was impressed with what I saw from Hurns as well but come on. Let's see how he plays in the regular season before we put him ahead of shorts, Lee or Robinson. I've seen to many WRs flash in preseason then do nothing in the real season.

Quote:Cecil has never been the most talented WR on this team during his tenure, but he has been the most consistent in terms of production. Ultimately, experience is what sets him apart from everyone else. By the end of the season, I expect one of the rookies to flash enough to take the #1 spot. Cecil is a free agent after the season?
You used the word that should be said instead of best which is experienced because I'll give them that. I'm just not sold on Shorts or Henne being the best of nothing right now or never. Shorts is a steady player and all but I don't like him leading the wr corps. Because he's also consistent at standing on the sidelines in regular clothes on game day for stretches of the season.

Quote:Yes, I fully agree, I mean no organization in history has ever been wrong with any depth chart. .. .. Oh wait

Except for the fact that the majority of the time they're right and the times they're wrong is an incredibly small percentage. This isn't a decision about a cut or a trade or who they're drafting.

It's literally just about who the starters will be. Not even who will get the most PT.

The hands down choice is to start Cecil as the "#1" WR because he is the only guy out of the top 4 wideouts with a single game of NFL experience, and its actually 3 seasons worth with 2 pretty productive ones.... Which, coincidentally were AFTER his rookie season.

Which last time I checked, the next three are rookies.

Quote:It still kills me the number of folks that don't understand "#1" receiver.

He's usually the Z (flanker,) not the X (split end.)

There is no singular silo or list from best to worst.

In other words, if you have a playmaker that can take the top off the defense, he's playing Z (flanker.)  X is your possession receiver.

Shorts is our X, and Lee is starting at Z.  When Robinson is back, he's probably X and Shorts moving inside to Y (slot.)

Call Shorts "#1" all you like, but that's not the role he's being asked to play.  At least, not while Lee is Z.
It depends on the scheme.

Under Coughlin Jimmy was the X and Keenan was the Z.

Worst to 1st.  Curse Reversed!

Shorts is nothing special, and would be a 3rd or 4th WR on a forced depth chart on most other teams.  By season's end, if all remain healthy, Lee and Robinson will be the top WRs, with Hurns winning a close call for 3rd over Shorts in a forced depth ranking.  With his experience, I do think they'll offer Shorts a contract, but it will be less than many think.

That may very well be the case. We will know soon enough. For now, for a multitude of reasons, he's the best receiver on the roster.
Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

You're absolutely right, for now...he is.  By season's end, though,  I'd like to see him unseated... only because it'd mean that our other receivers have gotten that much better !

I could give you at least a dozen teams where Shorts would easily start

+1

and without Blackmon, Shorts' YPC is much lower than it is when he's got Blackmon on the other side.

I'm hoping they don't shell out big cash to keep Shorts here. Save the big cash for legit WR1 types, should we get any. I'm OK with Shorts hanging around with a moderate contract extension, but if its going to take Eric Decker money to keep Shorts here, they should let him walk.

I totally agree with that. Shorts is a good WR but he's nothing special. Lee, Robinson and Hurns will be just fine next year with BB slinging that rock around.

except this is a blatant lie and i pulled the stats. shorts YPC is exactly the same whether blackmon is on or off the field.

Except, no you didn't. You cited a few games Shorts played with Blackmon from 2013 to disprove the TOTAL. Fail.

Shorts YPC in 2012 was 17, Shorts YPC in 2013 was 11.8. Even with the few games in your favor in 2013, the totals still easily bear out my claim.

in 2013 when shorts played with blackmon, his YPC is 11.8. in 2013 when shorts played without blackmon his YPC is 11.8.

that is known as exactly the same.

so yes i did.

Shorts YPC average with Blackmon is completely irrelevant considering there is no Blackmon to talk about this year.  In his absence, the best receiver currently on the roster based on NFL stats continues to be CSIII.  Until another player is able to put up stats to top him, that remains the case.

LOL .....so yes, as I said, you tried using a few outlier games to disprove the TOTAL YPC discrepancy in the amount of games they played together/ without Blackmon on the other side.

Why does 3 games in 2013 trump what the entire seasons worth of 2012 stats already proved??

Why does it matter?  Blackmon isn't out there.  May never get out there.  Let's deal in reality, shall we?

I don't see Shorts remaining the "top dog" for long.

He's not the most talented WR on this roster. Probably 4th on that pecking order with Hurns, Lee, and Robinson all ahead.

because there was no point in 2012 when blackmon wasnt on the field to go from.

but in 2013 when blackmon missed games, the YPC was exactly the same. those are called facts. you can skew it however you want.

Yes, because history tells us that rookie receivers always hit the ground running and become statistical studs right away.
