Per Caldwell:
Quote:“We’re heavy at that position right now and to see Chris Smith and Ryan Davis come along with Branch and now Clemons, we feel we have a good situation and there’s a lot of competition there, too, with Gerald, who is more of a Leo,” Caldwell said.

Asked if cutting Babin, who led the Jaguars with 7.5 sacks last year is a sign the Jaguars have more depth this year, Caldwell said: “I hope so. Jason still has something left in the tank and we just felt like some of these other guys need the reps.”

Quote:I'm with you on Branch. He hasn't sold me yet. However he is an asset to the team during hot weather games with his ferociously windmilling arms. Unfortunately it's the opposing team's offensive tackle getting the most benefit.
I may be wrong, but I think you missed his sarcasm.

Is anyone else smiling because Caldwell said we were "heavy" at LEO?

I know I am.

Quote:It appears the team would rather waste time successfully scheming for Branch to produce rather than rely on the raw talent of Babin.

Everything I read points to a 2 - 3 year period for DEs not named Clowney or Watt to learn how to play DE in the NFL. I don't think it's a as much a matter of scheming to make Branch successful as it is the LEO position being more suitable for Branch's skill set

Quote:I think this is mostly about Branch and his offseason.    Clemons, Branch and Babin were going to have to split LEO snaps 3 ways.   For a team in a rebuilding process, there was no need to give snaps to a 34 year old Babin at the expense of a 24 year old Branch.

Pretty much.

Plus, it gives him the courtesy of time to shop himself to another team before the season starts (he wasn't Leftwich'd.)

I certainly hope so.  LEO was MIA last year.

Makes a lot of sense.  It makes me optimistic about the LEO position.

If they're willing to walk away from a guy they re-signed as an insurance policy, I'd say they feel the team is in a much better place at the LEO position than it was a year ago.

It's kind of funny watching Alfie do everything he can to avoid admitting that perhaps Branch has shown improvement.  Someone said Gus mentioned Branch after almost every practice, and Alfie tried to spin it like he was being asked directly about the guy.  Another commenter corrected him by pointing out the question was a generic one about what players stood out during specific practices.  Never asked by name.  Poor Alfie.

I really hope he gets a chance this year.

This Youth Movement is gaining momentum. I figured that Babin was an (?) but I thought that he'd last into training camp. The fact that he didn't speaks volumes for the younger guys...

I'm also thinking that Bradley may have wanted him released prior to camp due to the installation of the new defensive scheme. If Babin knew of the scheme and was signed by an rival team, there goes our leg up...

He really was a fun guy to watch. Hopefully he takes advantage of this opportunity.
