Quote:I'll say this though,Really dont wanna waste a pick on Murray we would have to have 3 QBs on the roster, Bortles is the guy, pick another QB next year in the mid rounds, or pick somebody like Brent Smith or Shaw in the 6th or 7th round. Caldwell wants 4-5 starters out of this draft, already your 1st round QB not gonna start and you want to pick another one in the 4th? Makes no sense In the last 20 years only like 3 teams has taken two QBs in the same draft

Quote:I like the idea of Murray because he's a 4 year college guy. (and good, IMO) Could actually be ready before Bortles. Just don't see the need for a guy like that. Let's say Chad starts 10 games this year. Blackmon comes back, and Bortles starts the last 6 games. It should be Bortles' team from then on. Henne becomes backup. Doubt anyone will want to trade for Murray in 2 years when he hasn't had any playing time and doesn't have any elite measurables.

They got their guy, and they feel confident he's going to be their QB for the next decade. One thing Gus and Dave both mentioned was that Bortles came into this process open to coaching, and willing to take the constructive criticism and work on addressing those issues. They loved the fact that he's passionate about the game, which is something Gus has mentioned repeatedly since coming to Jax as one of the main criteria he looks for. Gus mentioned that they want players who are willing to accept their flaws, and are committed to working on fixing those issues. Both guys said they felt he was genuine in his responses, The fact that Dave managed to poll the scouts and coaches to get their feedback, and the consensus was that Bortles should be the guy if they went QB was also interesting to me. They brought every QB prospect worth noting to Jax for workouts, and he was the one that got a unanimous thumbs up from the entire staff. That speaks volumes for me. We will see if this pick pans out. I'm hopeful it does. If we wind up with a Roethlisberger type player who is our QB for a decade or more, I'm fine with that. I think most fans will be. But, we need to be patient and let him develop. They're clearly in no hurry to rush him out there. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

The only benefit Gabbert has served this franchise is teaching us not to rush a QB.
I don't think Gabbert would have made it even sitting on the bench for 2 years, but that's beside the point. I feel comfortable keeping Bortles on the bench until Justin Blackmon comes back, or when he's just flat-out ready. It will help if we get him some good receivers in this draft.

Quote:IDK. Buff was at 9 and still had to give up next year's 1st to move up to 4.. Whereas Dave's price to move up to 3 was stated to be atleast a future 1st if we were to go outside the top 10. If that makes any sense If we end up getting our Matt Ryan or Ben Roethlisberger with this pick, nobody will care about the fact that we didn't trade down. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
Quote:Just don't see the need for a guy like that. If we got a guy like Murray, and he developed into an effective backup, it wouldn't take a lot to get trade value for him. It would be a situation similar to when we had Rob Johnson. One or two starts, or rock solid preseason performances can show enough to gin up future trade value. We have 10 picks. Finding a young, solid backup who might offer us additional value down the road isn't a bad thing. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I think he can be better than Henne as a long term backup Heck, if Henne does what they hope this year, even he might generate some trade interest. Never argue with idiots. Quote:To be truthful, with all the Mack and Watkins talk the past week, I kinda had myself expecting a pick of either, or a trade down with Detroit with them taking Watkins. TMD, like I expressed on the MB, the other day, a trade with the Jaguars and Lions wasn't realistic based on the worth of pick # 3 to the Jaguars and Martin Mayhew not being the type of GM that would pay a heavy price to trade up in Round 1. The only way a trade was possibly going to happen is if the Jaguars were clearly comfortable going down to pick # 10 and the price for the Lions to trade up was noticably lower than on the points trade chart that Jimmy Johnson brought to Dallas and the NFL. Now that we know that Blake Bortles was the Jaguars target with pick # 3, it's fair to say that it was too risky for the Jaguars to trade down if Bortles was far above the other QB's on the Jaguars draft board. Being that I projected the Browns to draft Bortles with pick # 4 in the 100 player Mock Draft I posted on the MB on Wednesday, I totally understand and respect the Jaguars decision to keep pick # 3. I'm going under the assumption that the Jaguars value Bortles more than the package that the Bills gave the Browns to move up from pick # 9 to pick # 4. Considering how much the Bills paid the Browns, it speaks volumes how much Dave Caldwell likes Bortles as an NFL prospect. Like with all draft decisions, time will tell if Caldwell was correct.
Quote:I agree. I just don't think Murray is that guy. I wonder. Its clear that Bortles is Caldwell's type for a QB, which is similar to what he learned in Atlanta (Ryan) and Indy (Manning)....but does that mean that if Caldwell drafts a 2nd QB will he follow the same template, or might they go for a different sort. If so, Murray might indeed be the guy.

Quote:Just don't see the need for a guy like that. This talk is precisely why I was livid that we skipped on Sammy Watkins. Now we're pinning our hopes on Blackmon to pull his head out of his rear. Blackmon is a luxury and we have to build like he's not even on the roster. But I'm just a fan, so I don't know anything.

I think they may pick up a QB in the 4th or 5th. I am also leaning towards Dave building an offense. Just like TMD mention. Look where Dave made his bones. In Indi they drafted Manning & in ATL went got Ryan. That's all he knows and been taught. Get a QB and build a team around him. Polian was on ESPN looking like a proud Father & also told Dave good job. Polian built an offense around Manning. Dimitroff built an offense around Ryan. Which leads me to believe Daves plans/mindset & what TMD touch on. Dave blew smoke & threw everyone off because his mind was made up to get his QB. Now he will put playmakers around him & fix our o-line. He also blew smokescreens about Blackmon saying they were not counting on him. They know he's coming back and being reinstated this season. We will have him plus the Draft picks to complete the offense. Gus is the x factor to seal the deal with the Defense. We only need 3 pieces which are FS, LB & LEO. We cant get it all this yr. Next yrs draft will complete our team. I believe it will all come together. 3yr plan is what I been saying all along. Must admit my heart jumped when Blake Bortles was announce. Did not see that coming at all.

Quote:lot of draft left my man Quote:Lots of good WR left. Absolutely, but I'm a believer in the idea that Sammy Watkins is a great receiver. I don't want a "good" receiver. I want a great one, and Sammy Watkins reminds me of a more vertical Julio Jones. But like I said, I'm an ignorant fan first and pseudo-draft expert second, so I'll wait and see. I'm not overly excited about Bortles. His meteoric rise is eerily similar to Gabbert's. Now I'm not saying he's the next Gabbert but I cannot handle another string of draft busts at quarterback like the Browns, Lions, Raiders, and Vikings fans have been doing.

i winced when i saw this pick as I was preparing my mack happy dance
my missus was like are you upset which put it in a bit of perspective i wasn't upset it just came right out of left field as I never dreamed we would pick bortles that being said i like him, people saying gabbert 2.0 have not watched him in the slightest.. He is strong and stands upright in the pocket. He reminds me of andrew luck on the move and we will need a strong phyiscal guy in the pocket against clowney, watt and mathis twice a year His decision making is his fall down, as he currently does alot of one read stuff and his mental game needs to be worked through so sitting behind henne is a good call.even though another year of henne will hurt if this 1 year turns bortles into our franchise guy for a decade I can certainly live with that this does however reinforce my feeling that caldwell has 3 years to get us to 8 and 8 which meant he had to draft his guy now to give him time for development biggest relief in the draft was minnesota grabbing teddy before houston, don't think I could have taken that |
